Default Power steering pump

So my power steering just completely cut out. I was driving and everything was fine (I was kinda going wot) and the power steering just completely cut out. The fluid level is good, but the wheel is really hard to turn even while moving. Any ideas? I did just replace my steering rack, and after that the pump started to whine. Im thinking the pump just died.

I hear it's a common issue with these cars. A friend that autocrosses on 315s has gone through several through the years

Especially with the whining I would tend to believe the pump is the culprit.. Chris

Agree with pump, but you could still remove some fluid, and run it with the cap off and check for circulation. Also make sure you check for metal, you dont want to ruin the new rack.

well my power steering is back, i hit a pot hole and the car kinda bounced of the ground and my power steering returned, it still whines like crazy. so im gonna change the pump. but i was wondering if I should spend 350$ on a "turn one" pump with their pulley. or should i just go to autozone get a pump and the cooling system for it from them?

What is included in the pump and cooling system from auto zone? Everything but the rack? Also what is the cost of that? you can clean the lines out your self to save some $. I do it at work anytime a car comes in with a blown up part that contaminates the system. Do you have a compressor at all?

you're gonna need a puller set to get the OEM pulley off to access the pump bolts.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/POWER-STEERING-ALTERNATOR-PULLEY-PULLER-INSTALLER-SET-KD-2897D-/281126719996?hash=item41747551fc&item=281126719996&pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&vxp=mtr
last year, my high pressure hose(supply line to rack)started spraying. I wanted the pump off to do a cleaning. I work part time at Tuffy and used their set to remove the pulley. At the next Canfield Ohio swap meet, I picked up the set (new) for $39. I'll be replacing my pump(starting to scream when cold) very soon. 182,000 miles, about time for a new pump.

Turn one pump is pretty cool, expensive thoe. But if it were me I would just buy a quality pump from the part store. You can prob get the pulley remover/installer from the part store as a loaner if you don't think you will need it again. Save the extra cash and spend it on some go fast stuff. Also take clean magnet and check the reservoir for metal. If there is some clean everything the best you can.

Sure about that? What year car are you referring to?

Several years ago, I replaced the plug wires on my '96 LT-1 engined car, and the passenger side wires pass through a wire loom that's buried behind the p/s pump (???!!). In order to get the wires in/out, I had to loosen the pump and let it hang forward. There were a couple of holes in the face of the pulley, that allowed access to the bolts.

Keep in mind, if down time isn't an issue, Turn One will rebuild your pump for a lot less $$$.

If I understand what they say on their website, yes, you can. It just doesn't say how long the turn around time is.

so I decided to go with the autozone one for now, its only 52$ and has a lifetime warranty. Im also gonna get their cooling system thing for the power steering fluid. Eventually ill get the turn one pump. But for now I decided just to save some money and invest it in suspension parts.

I didn't know Turn One offered a LT1 pump. I thought it was all LS1 based pumps?

My pump whines slightly only during autocross events, but the B&M stacked plate cooler helped quiet it down and prolong it. Stock 66k mi 95 Z28 pump.

I had the same exact symptoms with my 02 z28 and I replaced the power steering pump and it made no difference. A couple of months later my alternator died and I noticed there was a minor leak in one of the hoses. I changed that and now it drives much smoother, but sometimes it still locks up and become really hard to turn. Check your hoses as they may be the culprit. I'm still trying to figure out what could be causing mine though. Good luck!
