Default Driver side splash shield

Not sure if this is the right forum, but then again, I don't know where else to put it lol.

When I removed the motor from my car, somehow the splash shield that sits on the drivers side of the engine bay was torn. (it's the one that has one of the braces on the k-member pass through it)

Is this shield totally necessary? What was it supposed to protect? Where the steering shaft connects to the steering rack? The cruise control module?
