Default 97 Firebird Parking Brake Handle

Can't really find anything to answer my question but basically what's happening is when I pull the handle, the brakes don't engage. I've narrowed it down to the pawl on the passenger side of the handle. If I stick a screwdriver down in there to press down on it, it engages the teeth below it and the parking brake works. If I don't, the handle just pulls straight up. Is there supposed to be a spring there?

Is the e-brake itself not engaging, or just the handle not locking into place to keep it engaged? There should be a small spring to keep the pawl in place. 93-97 is on top.

That picture is exactly what I needed. I'm missing that spring in the picture that pushes the pawl down to engage the teeth.
