Default Power Steering Question/Problem

2002 WS6 My ps pump was very whiny & loud, even when driving straight. The power would go in & out when the weather was very cold, for the first couple minutes of driving. I had the pump replaced. My steering got very hard. Not so much driving, but almost impossible to get in & out of parking spots. I took it back and was told the rack & pinion was bad, and leaking. Got that replaced. Steering was still the same. Went back again. He replaced the pump again, along with a pulley and a hose. The steering is still hard at slow/idle speed. It's not as bad when giving it gas. The mechanic is at a loss. He says he replaced everything that could be causing it, and he just can't figure it out.

Any ideas?
thanks in advance

I am going out on a limb here....rebuilds aint what they used to be.....especially when it comes to steering parts.......if I did not rebuild it myself I would only trust a expert rebuilder

yes.....i suspect the quality of your reman rack and pump

Moving to suspension and brakes.

What is the brand and part number of the pump? This behavior should be related to the pressure relief valve in the unit.

All I know is, he said the pump was AC Delco. It's actually the 4th one in that car. They have been very loud & whiny. He mentioned something about pressure before, and that it might be too high, but that doesn't account for the hard steering.

raising pressure from the pump should decrease steering effort......even ac delco quality is hit or miss on remans

Purchased a power steering pump with reservoir from O'rileiy's and a reman AC Delco rack-n-pinion from Rockauto. Installed it and bled the system with the power steering fluid I purchased from the stealership. I haven't had any issues to date and that was back 2014 but I've only put 6,000 miles on the car since.

Did your "mechanic" give you a receipt with a part number on it? If the person you are going to doesn't do this, you should go somewhere else.

If we don't know what's installed on the car, it's really hard to know what's going on. For all we know, you could have an entirely wrong part.

Seconded. Replaced the rack in my buddies LT1 Trans Am a few years back and it was the same think. Reman racks are a crap shoot.
