Default Combatting understeer

Hey y’all,

I love hitting the back roads in my 2000 Z28. They’re super tight and they leave room for straight pulls too. I have very few handling mods done, just KYB gas-a-justs and Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 275s on all 4 corners with wheel spacers to bring them out to the fender edges. Front bushings desperately need doing, likely going polys with the exception of the rearward LCA. I run my tire pressure at 35 psi on all 4 and I find I actually understeer through the corner if I have a hot entry and hit the gas mid-corner, which is the opposite of what I was expecting for the architecture of this car. What fine tuning can I do before I do the bigger mods like sway bars and the Koni/Strano kit?

Sounds like the understeer is preventing you from killing yourself!

By the sounds of it some maintenance is in order. Replace any worn bushings, ball joints and tie rods that need doing. A tight front end will give you a noticeable difference cornering.

Tires provide grip, quality parts provide good tire contact. Without good contact, you have no grip.

the rabbit hole gets deep with quality parts. Find a balance that suits your budget.

I won’t say you’re wrong.

Try dropping your front tire pressure by 5 PSI and stiffening the rear shocks.

So one thing I am doing is just improving my technique in general, I’m also redoing my front bushings and joints since those are worn and torn. All poly except for rearward LCA bushings since those are lateral (EDIT: which I realized I had already previously mentioned). For shocks and springs, I’m aiming for Strano’s HP2 kit but would love the HP6 if possible. Right now this is what I’ll call a “spirited daily” that’ll eventually evolve into a 80/20 weekend/daily car with some track time here and there.

EDIT: I also lied about my tire pressure. I run it at OE spec at 30 on all 4 corners.
