Default Weld SFC's in yourself?

We've got all the proper equipment to do this, but my dad was a little worried about the overhead weld. Has anyone done this, and if so could you tell me if the overhead is really that bad.

I did it; thought there was nothing to it. As far as it being a overhead weld, I don't even have a lift, just put the car on jackstands. As long as you dress properly with auto helmet, long gloves, longs sleeves etc. shouldn't be a problem.

Welding to the pinch seam will be the hardest. Just use good welding procedures and clean the metal off well first.

We've got a lift so that will make it easier. My dad just hasn't done many overhead welds so he was worried about messing up my car.

Welding overhead is about the same, it's just that the sparks fall toward you, so he needs to step back and/or wear a high collared shirt. Just use a gas-shielded MIG welder that's setup with the right settings for the thickness of the metal and it won't mess up the car. Oh and be sure to disconnect the car's battery!

Thanks for the advice Cal. I'll let him know. We've got a nice MIG welder so he'll get all settings right I'm sure. Any advice on what size welding wire to use.

I use .035" steel wire for that kind of stuff, but the size isn't all that critical. .030" would probably work about as well.

I've never been able to weld out-of-position for ****.
What you should do is get plenty of scrap and get
some practice and speed/heat dialed in, before you
take it to the sheet metal.
