Default what materials for building custom crossmember?

I want to build a custom crossmember for my project car. I was leaning towards using (extruded) boxed aluminum tubing, but don't know much about what wall thickness or special designs to run. I know GM uses an aluminum subframe on their vehicles, so I don't think it will be a problem to make it out of aluminum. This is not a strip-only car... and the weight of the engine sits on the front crossmember. Any unput?!

Thanks, -Dave
