Default opinions on 10 bolts

I currently have a 2002 z28 M6 with 102,000 miles. I put LT's, ory, ported TB, tune, LCA's, and relocation brackets. I also upgrated to 17X10.5" rims with 285's on all 4 corners. My concern now is the rear. I'm affraid of breaking it because my freind did last year with his 94 and I've also heard of other peole breaking. How weak exactly is the stock 10 bolt? Would i be ok to throw some gears in or should i just start saving up now and buy a 12 bolt? This question is really starting to bug me because its just starting to get nice out and i dont want to break and have the car laid up for a couple of months while im trying to save for a new rear. Thanks for the help.

Derek

10 bolt sucks, don't do a damn thing to it, save your money and get a new rear, for just general driving around it'll likely be fine, but you start hot rodding around, or launching at the track, and chances are you'll break it
You might also want to consider a Dana 60 (there's a GP going on now) they're pretty damn stout rears, and about the same price as a 12 bolt
Yes there are some who have 100s of hard launches on the 10 bolt, and don't have a problem, but then again, there are those that break it just messing around on the street, seems to be the luck of the draw
BTW it seems the M6 is harder on the 10 bolt than the auto, so depending on what you have you may be fine for a while

A sticky in here I read said that 12 bolts are for automatics and a 9 inch is for an M6. Not that a 12 bolt wont work just that with the M6 you can launch it harder and not have as much concern about blowing up the 12 bolt. So I guess you have to weigh cost, how much further you may go with mods, and if you race at all.

I would also agree, dont touch the 10 bolt, save your money for a 12 bolt. There are a few things you can do to strengthen a 12 bolt, but with a decent launch, it could still easily give up. No use spending 800 bucks after gears, install kit, rear end cover, and labor putting it, and then maybe break it, and start over again and be out 800 bucks. Just put the money towards a new rearend.
