Default Gone Bad Shock or Spring?????

About a month ago I hit a curb really bad and it broke the front wheel. Now the car sits 1/2in lower on the front side. I'm thinking the shock or spring is not holding up. So which would more likely have gone bad from a bad impact.?? The Koni or the Hypercoil? I need to replace either to fix it... So should I try new springs? or just replace the shock?

I vote for a bent control arm. Springs are tempered. They can sag, but I doubt that hitting a curb would cause it. Same for shocks. I'm guessing that you bent the lower control arm (not unusual).

trackbird, could you explain to me how a bent control arm would cause a 1/2in drop? I just dont understand the front suspension that much...

The shocks are mounted to the front control arms. The springs are mounted to the shocks. That's what supports the vehicle. If you shorten the springs (and keep the rate the same, I'm not getting into that discussion right now), you lower the car. If you were to bend the control arm between the lower shock mount (on the control arm) and the balljoint, the ride height could be changed. I suspect you'll find that the control arm is bent at the shock mount or between the mount and the balljoint. I'd think you would be able to see a bend that could generate a 1/2" difference in ride height, but, how visible it is depends on lots of things.

I'd start by looking at both lower arms and trying to see if one looks "kinked" or bent.

Did that help?

ok so the front control arms are the ones at the base right? cuz the top are the A arms.? ANd Ive looked down in there for any sort of bend but nothing looks visibly bent.

Althought you are probably correct. Well I guess I'm ordering a front control arm. Does it include the balljoint.??

Appreciate the feedback trackbird.

Depending on how you hit, and how hard, anything could be bent. The spindles are known for bending in an impact, the lower A arm could bend, you could bend the K-member. It's hard to diagnose from where I'm sitting, but I'm glad to offer any guidance that I can.

You can do it in your garage, but how long it takes depends on who you have to help. I can be all day job.
