Default 1" 'dead space' in steering after rack removal..Fix?

Hey all-- guessing this is the best category to post this in...
I finished a heads/cam/UD pulley install about two weeks ago, and since putting her back together, there's been this loose spot in the steering right at center-- it's a real PITA, and makes all steering efforts jerky, since to make tiny L-R adjustments, I have to move the wheel almost a whole inch either way... I'm not sure what is causing it.
The steering rack was completely removed, ('01 C5, BTW)but everything seems tightened up properly. I had the car aligned, thinking this could have something to do with it, but it didn't help at all. I can't see how I could have lost any power steering fluid, since I didn't disconnect those lines...
Any advise/insight/experience would be greatly appreciated.. I go to the strip for the first time next Sat, and I'm not looking forward to jerky steering at WOT at 118+(?)MPH--
Thanks

Not sure how it could have happened, but the rack may be bad now. One night, like a dumbass, I jacked the car in a bad spot, the jack slipped and fell onto the Driver's side tie rod Rack from GM is $580 and is a reman. So, I got one from Billy Graham for $100, put it in, PITA for those of you who haven't done it, motor has to be loosened and raised to just get the bolts out After 8 curse word filled hours, the rack had play in it. Thought it was the bad tires, got new ones and an alignment. NOPE, this rack was bad. Called BG, back and they were gracuious enough to send me another even though it was like 3 months later. Finally put the 2nd used rack in and a little play took it into the dealer for all the last minute (35k mi) warranty stuff, and they said the rack was bad and replaced for free under warranty. Yes, I feel bad for taking GM for $800 I know it's a long story, but I would just take it into the dealer, complain about it, and see what they say. You may have jerked on it, or something, and stripped a pinion tooth That's what warranties are for. Just try to look like this when you go in

Excellent advise, exept that the dealership is where I got all the gaskets, bolts, and such for the h/c job. I used to work there, so the parts guys (who gave me the stuff at employee discount)all know I've been in the car-- I highly doubt I will get any warranty coverage on her anymore--they know it's been taken out Even if I took it to another dealer, the cam I have makes it dreadfully obvious that she's not stock...and any tech would know that if it's not, that the rack had to come out to put it in...

Take it a city or two away. It would be worth the hassle to have it done for free!! If they ask about the noise, just tell thyem it's the cat back. Most people wouldn't even think about H/C work being done!
