Default Z28 or SS

If I plan on heavily modifying a Camaro for street and track use should I start with a Z28 or a SS

a SS is nothing more than a Z28 with exhaust, suspension, and look upgrades.

It starts life as a Z28, and is converted by slp into a SS.

if your modding for 1/4 mile performance, go with a Z28.

i said it in the other post..

you don't get anything that you need with an SS, it's just an appearence package

1/4 mile, Autocross and Road Racing... a no-option Z28 is your best bet

heavy mods include:
race wheels and race tires
shocks and springs
T2-R differential
brakes
lightweight, rod-ended suspension parts
roll cage

the only thing on that list that you can get with a SS is shocks.. the 1LE option is pretty expensive and you end up with other parts that are sub-par

you do get larger anti-sway bars with the 1LE SS, but if you get the right springs for your car the stock sway bars will be fine

also, it sounds like you're getting ready to do some racing... have you put any thought into T2 SCCA racing?.. if so, there is very little you can change...
any real competition has limits on modifications
and a no-option Z28 is still the best if you decide to road race competitively

I think the guys are trying to steer you correctly here. For any really serious competition you might chose whether drag's or road coarse work, you are going to change the suspension. The SS is a great looking and performing car but $3500 more than a Z28 and that could fill a major part of the suspension/wheels/tires for road coarse work. The sme $3500 spent on a Drag cars suspension and power mods will put you way ahead of the SS. You also won't be modifying a more "collectable" SS and loosing $$$ 'cause of that aspect.

I agree with everyone else.A no option Z is lighter and a hell of a lot cheaper.I bought my Z with absolutely no options in march when GM had the $2002 rebate.$19,800 sweet deal!No cash down!5.74% interest=60 pays @ $413!Stripped Z, best bang for the buck,No Doubt About It!!!!!!!!!!!

All of the guys above are exactly correct. I ordered my 02' Z28 with 0 options. All I wanted was that bad *** LS1 and the 6spd. It came standard with the monsoon stereo system, tilt steering and the power steering cooler. I think that is about it? No T-tops, crank windows and push-pull locks. I dont know exactly how much weight that I saved. But last time I weighed at the track, 3634 race weight. That is with me, "190 lbs." and all the car came with. Also a child safety seat in the back! LOL! Still pulled off my best time of 12.9. Not too bad with just the basic mods down below. I smoke SS's all the time. They are nothing special. Close enough where it comes down to the drivers! If you want a collector, the SS or Firehawk is for you. If you want a bad *** race car for 5 grand less. Go with the Z. I know I dont regret it!
