Default Help with squeak!!!!

When I go over larger bumps, I get a quick squeak from the right rear of the car. I believe this is a bushing, but how can I tell which one? If I get under the car, what should I look for? Frayed edges? If I get them replaced, I can likely convince the wife to replace whatever it is attached to as well....my guess is the lower control arms as the car seems to slightly shift it's trajectory after going over the bump.....any thoughts/suggestions/comments? Thanks!

Edit: Oh yeah, it's a 2000 Z28 if that matters at all.

My shot LCA bushings were quiet over bumbs but did give a squeek in braking/accelerration. It could be panhard bar bushing. Just a guess though.

Don't get stock bushings replaced unless you're getting that under warranty. Stock LCA bushings alone cost almost half of aftermarket LCAs bushings included.

Yeah, won't be replacing with stock rubber garbage.

Then I would leave the stock LCAs alone. I put poly pushings into stockers and the result wasn't pretty. The stock LCAs are so flimsy they got bent all over during the process. Maybe I was little brutal... Went with BMR boxed poly/rubber, which in turn is an overkill and too heavy as well. Now I would go with tubular poly/rubber LCAs for street use. Anyway, you have good excuse to get some PHB + LCAs.

I've got the exact same thing, except I have replaced my LCA's. I have a feeling it is my panhard bar cuz that's the only thing I have left back there that hasn't been replaced, but it soon will be!

The PHB makes sense. The bushings at the very least have to be replaced, but just replacing those won't do as the OEM bushings will just wear out again. I'll get the BMR adjustable PHB, tubular with poly bushings. Sweet.

I'll get someone to find out exactly where the problem is and go from there. I don't know what to look for when trying to spot a dying/dead bushing.

Well son of a bitch! I have a '00 z28 and I have the exact same problem. I've done just about everything to try to figure out where it's coming from. I didn't think it might be the LCA's or the PHB. Looks like it's time for some suspension mods! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

BTW, my squeak popped up right after I had my hooker (cat back) installed. I thought it might be loose somewhere, but I checked everything.

I had bad buzzing and squeaking first time I
put the Y pipe. That back axle arch is real
tight, between gas tank heat shield and Panhard
bar, there's about 1/4" of clearance (and that
courtesy of a factory "dimple" in the pipe).
Probably not coincidental how yours showed up.
May need to refit the exhaust. Loosen the center
band clamp (if that's how yours still is), and wedge shims into every close pass in the exhaust.
Get it all at maximum spacing to other metal,
and then retighten.

I'll get back underneath the car tomorrow some time. I has to be the exhaust since I've checked everything else and I haven't modified anything else.

I'll post my results.

I think the squeak is coming from the passenger side exhaust hanger. I put a shim in it so there's no play. I didn't hear the squeak when I took it for a spin. That doesn't mean it's fixed yet. I'll keep my ears open.

BTW, thanks to everyone who posted. I think you guys have solved my problem!

In my case the rear squeak was due to a split upper shock bushing. It was most noisy going over something a speedbump. I replaced the bushing and have had no more squeak.

My car is stock as far as suspension goes, and it only happens over quick, jarring bumps (ie potholes, cracks in the pavement), but nothing if I am just cruising on the highway. I'll have to get someone to check it out.

My exhaust is stock, so that isn't the problem (I doubt anyway!)
