Actually as with most tires, it probably depends on the tire size. I had 275/35/18's and they were more than adequate. After 30k+ miles, I had as much shoulder (which usually goes first) as the rest of the tread.

Had the sidewalls been soft, the shoulders wouldn't have lasted and my rims would be fubar. <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" />

I would say go with the BFG KDW's. I have heard great things about them and they are around $150 at tirerack.com

Does anyone know anything about the Kumho Ecsta MX's??

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....rtnum=74YR7EMX

They showed up when I did a search at tirerack.com for 275/40/17's in the "Max Performance" category. Looking at any of the V700 series Kumhos, it looks like the treadwear rating is WAY low for a daily-driver street tire.

The best all around tire in my oppinion for a daily driver (including rain) is the BFG KDWS tires. I have had em now for a little over a year and they show very little signs of wear. They hook better than the F1's ever did and give up very little traction in the rain. They have a 400 treadwear rating which is double that of the F1's.

The best part, is you can find them for around $140 - $150 (275 40 17) from the online stores.

Joe (JPR) has driven my car and was very surprised at how well the tires hooked. FYI, I've got a set of his early stage I's on my car so he's driven my car a lot.

Good luck and check em out.

I'm going to experiment by getting different tires every year. This way I'll eventually find the best ones. I don't dislike the Kuhmos, just want/need something better. I only got a pair and still have a pair of GAs to replace come spring so I'll get something different and compare.
