Default VHT spray on stock tires?

There was an aritcle in this months's Car Craft (I think) about carrying a small spray bottle of VHT in the trunk for spraying the tires before a run - is this only for cheater slicks, or will it give any real benefit to ordinary street type tires?

It will help, here is a long story.
Quite a few years ago, I had a couple of friends who were into street racing. They were out one night playing around in his Chevelle with a few friends. One of the freinds had a 5.0 Mustang that ran pretty well{not as good as the Chevelle}.
A feller came up in another 5.0 what to race the Chevy. They told the feller he would have to race the othe Ford first and if he won, he would then run the Chevy. They raced for 100 bucks.
As they started to get ready to race, my friend got out the VHT for his friend. The other dude had a duck! Started whineing about cheating and said the race was off if they wouldn't share the stuff. Well, they poured a puddle in front of his tires and the other guys and they did their burnout. They then got lined up and I flaged them. The dude left at his normal 2000 or so rpm and immediatly got a huge bog of the line! Of couse he lost his 100 bucks. He was quite perturbed. He threw a heck of a monkey about the whole thing. Funny as heck. As far as the VHT helping your times- it will. Just don't think of it as a substitute for a good set of slicks. Expect a couple of tenths or so when you get used to the stuff and learn how to use it right.

Along the line of Judd's story I had a buddy when i was in college that used his windsheild wiper bottle to store his VHT. He snaked the line under the car to his rear tires just inside the inner vendor. Before running he would turn his wipers on and squirt the traction aid. The best part about it was people that didn't know his trick thought he was an idiot or extremely nervous because he turned his wipers on. The holeshots that he would pull on people was just plain ugly

we were doin that in the 80's. go to a junkyard and get a wiper resivor and pump-mount it in the trunk and feed the lines to the tires and a push switch up front to activate.
