Which Pads Leave The Least Dust?!?!?!?
#23
If you are specifically looking for a brake pad for the least amount of brake dust above anything else, those who voted for the stocks are exactly right.
I have had Performance Friction pads, as well as the PBR(Axxis) pads. Both stopped a LOT better than the stockers, but with their stopping power came all of their brake dust as well.
It seems like half the people here say that the Hawk HPS pads don't leave much dust, and the other half say that they do. It probably comes down to the individuals driving habits, but my guess is that if half of them are having lots of brake dust, they are probably doing more high speed braking than the other half.
Generally speaking the ceramic pads are designed to stop better and leave little brake dust. However, the trade off is they eat your rotors over time.
Good luck with your decision. I hope the info helps.

Metal Masters can dust badly if they are glazed (from not being bedded properly).

Might not be the most fair comparison then....

And on the Performance Frictions, I run them, because we just started offering a lifetime warranty on them (yeah, I still don't understand why we give a lifetime warranty on BLATANT wear item, but I digress...).....but they are rather dusty, stop good though.

Hawk Ceramics make less dust, but Hawk HPS pads are much better performers (I've had both). A few friends of mine have had GreenStuff's and said the braking was really strong, but at the cost of a good bit more dust.
In general, don't worry about brake dust. If you have painted wheels you can slap a coat of wax on there and the dust will wipe right off. IMHO, you should make the decision based on performance/life of the pad not how must dust it makes.
Hawk HPS FTW

rotex kevlar gold pads, very little dust and dust is NOT black!
i am in the process of doing a caliper polish job on mine, and I'm hoping to upgrade to ebay drill/slot rotors for the bling factor. Have chrome zr-1's.
Will be buying new pads to go with new rotors and have been researching pads a lot recently. My goals obviously are cleanliness & quietness for the pads. Car is a daily summer driver.
Check out Rotex gold kevlar pads from brakeworld dot com. Talked to them, explained my project, and they said they have MUCH less dusting and I would be VERY happy with them. They're also advertised as a great pad for drilled/slotted rotors. Be advised I haven't used them yet !!! but, this will be the route i go from what reviews I've been able to gather on brake pads.
There's also ceramicool pads, a ceramic pad, and are also supposed to be very clean but the impression they gave me were they are geared more towards repeated heavy, in-town stop and go braking and would run cooler and not have as much fade over repeated braking. I don't drive that way so the rotex for me are a better choice, mostly because they're cheaper.
edit 9/17/2007: have maybe 1000 miles on the rotex pads, they are great. They dust very little, and the dust they produce is not as black like I used to get with the oem pads. It's more white/silver 'ish and more transparent, so it hardly shows up. On my clearcoated 10-spoke rims you can't even tell it's on there after a week, my chrome zr-1's the wheel starts to look dull but it looks a lot better after a week compared to a week's worth of the oem pad.
brakes work great, a little groan after repeated breaking but i think it's because of the slotted rotors. very happy with the rotex kevlar gold especially for the price.

I'm now on my 2nd set of Hawk HPS. If you want a low dusting pad there are pads that dust MUCH less than these. For a high performance pad they have minimal dusting but don't fool yourself into thinking these dust comparable to a stock or ceramic pad...they don't. They do dust more. And they seem to aquire a bit of squeak as they get older and/or glazed from high heat. But once they get hot they do bite very hard.

I've tried the Hawk HPS and the EBC Greenstuff, among others. The Hawks are good overall performance pads, the EBC greenstuff seeemed to have more bite with maybe a little less dusting. The EBC did squeak for a while until they got bedded in really well. And I used the anti-squeal stuff on the backs of the pads too.
But one thing about the EBC pads they don't have the anti-rattle plates (or what ever they are called) on the back of them like most pads including the stock, maybe that is why they like to squeal sometimes.
I now have Axxis metal masters pads and man, they just grip better the hotter they get, but the dusting - it's horrible on those.
You want less dust, go ceramic-just don't expect much better stopping power than stock with them...
