Default Strano-esque question....

OK, I've got a 95 Formula that the previous owner purchased the SLP Bilstein kit for, but didn't install the springs due to driveway entry clearance...I go to put the springs on, and the rears were no problem, but the front shocks aren't so good. The end cap (around the shaft) wobbles in the housing, the threads are all goobered up, and I'm stuck with a car that the front end is apart on.

I need to either order a set of SLP shocks, or upgrade. Cost is a HUGE factor, so I don't wanna get loopy with some ultra-hyper setup that will cause me to have to refinance the house...but I'd like something that is compatable with the stuff thats already on there. I'm not averse to the SLP stuff (I had the SLP Level 1 on my 01 Firehawk and it was great, and the ride on the Formula was fine for my driving style)

Sam, do you have any recommendations or anything in your product lineup? I'd like something that is good for 'spirited' driving, but won't rattle your teeth out on a road trip. I'd say 60/40 performance/comfort.

Ideas? (oh, and, BTW, the car is up on a lift at work, so I need a quick solution, if at all possible!)

Thanks in advance!

Byrdman

What kind of budget are you looking at?

This is a surprise...so there is no budget for it. As cheap as possible, and it be a good fix. I'd like to keep it under/around $400 for all 4 if needed, maybe $125 each on the fronts.

It sounds like you felt the SLP shocks were ok for your use. But SLP shocks are available only as sets of 4. You will spend around $419 on a set of 4 of those. You could for similar (but more) money get a front set of Koni's. You can for about $510 get yourself a set of SA Koni's for the front and team them w/your current rears if you feel they are good. You gain the rebound adjustment and the lifetime warranty vs. the SLP shocks.

Not much else it really ideal for lowering springs. HD's are really up to the task (when Bilstein has them--they don't currently). You could try a set of Tokico HPs' which would better suit your desired budget @ around $115 per front and are available.

Found a set of SLP shocks for sale for around $330 and ordered them. They may not be the best, but they work well and the price is as close to right as I can find on short notice.

Thanks for the help, all!

Looks like I'm back in the market for them. Every place I've called is back ordered till October.

Are these any good? Reliable?

What about these that he mentioned?

KYB shocks are going to be high risk in the fact that Sam and many mention they don't think they are good for anything except stock springs, but there are some who are personally satisfied with them. It's a chance you take of possibly being unsatisfied with them and tearing them out for konis someday

Yeah, after I posted I did a search and am going to shy away from the KYBs.

Are the Tokico shocks the HP Blue ones? P/N?

thx-

I don't think you're going to get the information you're after this way. Someone will chime in and tell you they're great. But what do they have to compare to? I can't really give you alternatives without a better understanding about what you are after for the car, what other parts are on the car.

I sell KYB. I sell Tokico, and Bilstein, and Koni, and Monroe, and Edelbrock, and so on. I have also driven each of them. I don't care what you buy, as long it's a good fit for your needs (which I can't know without speaking to you). But just asking what about this and what about that on a public forum that anyone can belong to isn't a very detailed way to get information.

Thanks Sam; good points about driving style and what I'm after...I've gotta take my son to the Dr...but I'll call after we get back.

Too many options, and I'd like to get my car back on the street sometime before the next election.

Thanks-

Wow. Spoke with Sam Friday afternoon, and got a LOT of info.

Folks, if you want to know what our cars can do, and the best way to do what you can with them, give him a call. Block off an hour or so (I got out under 45 minutes), because he'll answer every question you might have and probably lead you to some more.

I spoke with my financial counselor (the wife) and it looks like we'll be keeping the Formula around for a while, so we're getting the Konis for front and rear. Might as well set it up right and be happy with it, eh?

You will NOT be disappointed!! Besides the 100% better handling, control, turn-in, and even ride quality, these things last forever (unless you make a habit of driving into 2 foot deep potholes)!
