Default What the hell???

I just got off the phone with my mechanic. I dropped off my car to get my new tires put on, oil changed, and to have the back checked out because it was really squeeky after going over bumps. I figured it was just those rubber bushings in the back because when i sprayed them with lube they shut up. He told me my rear track bar or bars were bent and rubbing on the muffler and its going to cost $300 to be replaced!!! What the hell is a rear track bar and there must be a cheaper place to get one..

He probably means the panhard bar. If it is indeed bent, you can get a high quality tubular bar for a lot less than $300.

And as long as you can put 2 bolts in you can swap it yourself.

I can't prove it, but I think you are being taken for a ride. I could happily sell you a new PHB and stuff (I'm a UMI dealer), but I don't think you have anything going on back there like that. Not to take money or sales from myself or UMI. I'm pretty confident that Ryan @ UMI wouldn't want to sell you something directly that you didn't need either.

Clearly you isolated your noise by lubing some bushings and it went away. The PHB brace (above the PHB itself) has a big bend in it, which can look to the ignorant like it's "bent". And it's easy enough to check the PHB itself. Take it off, lay it on a flat surface and see if it's bent. I'll be money it's not.

Sweet. What is there to adjust? Are there different traction settings or something?

What is a PHB? I'm going to call him back and see what the part number is.

Just got off the phone, he said they are the rear link/track bars that go left to right, not up and down. Are those the same things we are talking about? And he said they cost $179 and $125 to install them..

Dude, you're being screwed. It takes, literally about 5 minutes to put a panhard bar (PHB) on which is held on by 2 bolts. The brace is right above it, and it's held on with a whopping 4 bolts.

My bet is the squeaking is your bushings.

Like Sam said, you probably don't need a new PHB. He knows suspension, try what he said.

Yea I'll try that when I get my car back. This is off topic but how much does it usually cost to have a "smoke test" done for a possible vaccuum leak?

This reminds me of that Dane Cook skit. "There's a tiny unicorn living in your muffler poking holes in it, and it was sh*tting in your filters" "Oh really a tiny unicorn huh? Yeah that's not good. How much will that cost? I was just about to say that I wanted to pay 2909909 dollars to get that fixed. Thank you for not f***ing me big time"

You should just check under your car and see where the muffler is being bent or contacting another part of your car. Diagnose the problem yourself and you won't bearly ever have to worry about the stealership

Maybe the upper panhard rod support bar is touching the exhaust?
