Mobile 1 used to say it could and I have used it that way. It worked fine for me.

probably not a good idea, years ago it was OK, but today the seals and components in power steering systems are made to deal with power steering fluid, not ATF. ATF is said to destroy seals and hoses over time. I dont know if synthetic is any different, but if it doesnt state specificaly that it can, I wouldnt take the chance when its not exactly a big deal to get a bottle of PS fluid instead.

I guess I should have said that I am currently running redline P/S fluid. I don't think it would be an issue, but I won't swear to it (synthetic ATF is reasonably thin).

Just my thoughts...

the problem isnt the viscosity, its that the seals and hoses are made form a rubber that isnt designed to be used with ATF. its the same basic principal as putting oil in your brake system, only much slower.

I should mention that I am stating something that was told to me about 10 years ago, when I was going to an automotive trade school. things may have changed since then, but my question would be, WHY put ATF in the power steering system? I know of no benefit, other than maybe the ATF is a buck cheaper, and it might cause trouble down the line.
