Dumb Brake Question

Somebody mentioned that I might have adapters on the wrong side so I took the adapters off and put them together to see if there was any difference in the way they would make the brakes sit on the rotors if they were swapped. The 2nd pic below shows that the bolt patterns are the same so I don't think this would make a difference although the adapters are slightly different in design as you can see.

However, since the adapters were hitting on the top spindle ear I ground off more on both sides of the vehicle to the point where the adapters could not touch the ear at all. Even though the bolts all went into the hub and screwed in I think that the ears were causing the adapters to be pushed out from the rotor which caused the calipers and pads to be pushed out as well. Everything seems to fit better with the brakes going farther onto the rotor. A test drive went fine but I won't know for sure until I look at the pads to make sure they are wearing correctly.
