The Lq9 has a cast iron block, hypereutectic flat top pistons, 317 heads, 10:1 compression, better rods.
The Lq4 has an aluminum block, cast dished pistons, 317 heads, 9.41:1 compression, cheaper.

Lq4 and lq9 share the same parts number only diff being rods and pistons. Lq9 having alittle higher compression. Only thing I would look for is getting as new of a block as possible sine I believe 02 and belies crank is 1/4 inch shorter and you have to use shims to line the tranny parts up (ninetres can elaborate more ) if u wan u can buy a bare block from the dealership cheap as he'll and swap over your crank and all covers for a 370 block. I would just upgrade the rods and pistons since u have it open anyways. If your trying to save money and **** you may wanna call some of the speedshops as all the labor and parts will run about the same as a shortblock would cost you. Just thinking for you as I'll need someone to race .

The 99-half of 00 was the .40 longer crank that will not work behind the T56, so pay attention if you want to run a T56.

The one you want is flush with the seal for the 6 speed.
