Thank you. I am well capable of comprehending what I read.

I am also capable of assessing a situation and figuring out my options.
I would have opted for emergency surgery, casted my entire hand (not just my ******* pinking in a cast like it's some movie), played football, and hoped for the best. If it isn't healed right after the season is over (in 6 months) and is threatening my very good shot at going pro (teams would have to tell me, "we want you."), I amputate.

And perhaps THE MOST IMPORTANT thought of all is he doesn't give a **** what any of us internet warriors think. I admire his courage to do what he thought he had to do not to let his teammates down.

When something means that much to a person, only that person can determine what the price of admission is. He made his choice and said he isn't looking back. Good for him....the world needs more people like him.

nope, 2 of my brothers have had this kinda injury. one in high school the other in college and there is no way to play with a pin in a finger. It's a very nasty break. you can't do **** with your hand and some times they get in there in also need to put a rod in to try and straighten the finger out some what. It's sit out or cut it off, they played baseball also so that wasn't much of an option.

These are cell phone pictures of my finger. I injured it in July playing basketball. I went to see the Dr. and it was so bad I had surgery the same day. They put an extention blocking pin in the joint so that I could not straighten my finger. Once the joint was healed the pin was removed and I started in therapy. It's now October and my finger has 15* range of motion. That's almost nothing. So next Tuesday I have to go back into surgery so the Dr. can remove scar tissue that has built up in the joint. It will take till the end of December before my finger is at about 85/90 %. The swelling and stiffness will take 12 - 18 months to go away.

You CANNOT put a cast over this and play. Between the risks of a pin tract infection and breaking the pin off in your finger, it's not possible. I'm sure if this were a normal broken finger, they would just cast it up and he could play, but because it was an extra bad break, they had to cut it off.

one of my brothers almost made me puke, his finger was turned upside down. coach and trainer saw it and freaked on the sideline, team dr. said it was the worst he had seen. after a couple pins and a rod it still points and is rotated the wrong direction LOL. Franken-Finger is what we call it. It's been 6 years and he can barely move the thing.

Other brother it screwed his baseball career, got hit the next season on the same finger and wrecked it again, his finger is all jacked up also still.

I'll see if i can find his X-rays,

I stand corrected. However, this guy plays for Mesa St. and is a 6'3" 280 O-lineman. I doubt he has a chance at going pro, so I still find his decision quite odd.

You should have had it amputed to show your b-ball buddies you were dedicated and didn't want to leave them hanging at the park.
