gears?

Well my 2000 trans am 6 speed has had a howling pinion bearing and I think its time to replace it lol..while I'm there I'm wanting to put in all new bearings and seals and also change out the gears.....
(I think the 6 speed cars have 3.42 stock gears correct?) I do a bunch of highway driving and I'm wanting to step up to 3.73 gears...will I notice a difference in acceleration and performance or is it a waste of time swapping from the 3.42 gears to 3.73's?
If I supply all the parts(full rebuild kit w/ bearings, fluid, and new 3.73 gears) about how much does someone charge to do the install...who in the dfw area does a good job and how much?

As to your question about seeing a difference... I can feel a difference in 3.23's to 3.73's
on a 02 z28 A4
As for your 3.42's to 3.73s...I am sure you will feel the difference..... Or more so you will be able to tell in your shifting.. LOL

but I think you will be happier with the 3.73's..

I can feel a little difference on the highway. I can tell the difference taking off though. At the track, I don't bog near as bad.

I think you will like the 3.73's.
And yes you will notice the difference.

3.42 to 3.73 was a common mod back in the 3rd gen days. Yes, you will feeel a difference. There are also 3.90's if you want to step up a little higher, but not too high. I'm running 3.89 (9") and really like them for daily driving. 3.90's would be the same.
