ask this in the gun section of seatstaysup.com you'll get much better answers tehre
Glocks are cheap and reliable, but i cant vouch for their accuracy. very popular with police depts.

Most of the answers your getting and gonna get are what people have. The best thing to do would be to test these weapons for yourself because some people are accurate with Glocks(I am), some are not. Alot of people don like the Glocks because their frame and shape does not feel normal to them. So go shoot some guns at a range. I used to go to Top Gun off of Richmond and Fountain View over by 59S. Its a nice indoor range wth a helpful staff with lots of knowledge and lots of weapons to rent, full autos too

i have a px4 .40 cal and love it! it has more recoil tho than a 9mm and .45 but as accurate as a bullseye
all my guns have a hammer and this is the only one i would trust with my life. I carry it daily and take it to the gun range to prove its not just a holster queen. I put green trijicons and a stainless steel guide rod. its italian, what more can i say
i had the px4 sub compact but didnt use it much and sold it.

1911's. the 1911 platform has been around for 100 years and you cant go wrong with one. you can customize it to death if you like, or leave it as it comes. Colt is probably the best.

Conceal Carry: Glock 26 with a great round (I like Federal Hydra Shok) 147 grain. It WILL stop an agressor.

Balistic test have showed them to fragment and not expand all that well.
I carry and recommend federal premium HST's. Law enforcement tactical. Tests show them expand to a quarters size in the .45 platform. Check em out.

I had a problem with it jamming the first time I took it to the range. I had just taken it out of the box and didn't even clean it. After this I have never shot a new gun without cleaning it first. After I cleaned it the first time I have shot 1500+ rounds through it and never had another failure.
I highly recommend it as a target/home protection gun. I wouldn't want to carry it all the time though as I would prefer a compact gun to conceal.
I would even recommend it over many of the more expensive guns. Out of all the 9mm's I have put numerous rounds through this and/or the XD9 would be my top two choices, and I have shot quite a few. The only gun I would prefer to have is a Kimber 1911 in a .45, however I don't want to spend that much money on the gun or the ammo.
I don't even buy 9mm ammo as often anymore, now that prices are way up. At the range I shoot my Walther P22 ALOT more...the ammo is so cheap!

I love my HK .40 USPc
It is the perfect blend of function, reliability and ergonomics for me, but if function and ergonomics weren't important (to me) I'd carry a Glock with just as much confidence and they are a bit less expensive.
I love the 1911, but I'd never use one as a carry pistol, they just take too much work to become both reliable and suitable for carry use (imho). Having said that I think Springfield Armory gives you the best bang for the buck in a 1911.
Glock would be my suggestion - see if one fits you. I personally can't stand holding one and the safety drives me batty, but there is no arguing that they are a great gun and are priced VERY reasonably - they are also incredibly reliable.
Also consider a revolver if you are looking for accurate, reliable, and affordable. I don't think the compact .38s are any fun to shoot, but if you want something small and cheap that will fire every time a Taurus .38 would never do you wrong. There are also a number of larger frames that are fantastic, and the .357 is an incredible(and affordable) round.
