I asked my Dad after he came home from Nam about his pistol. He said the Govt. Model 1911 .45 was the best thing to happen to close combat warfare. The round was designed and manufactured for the sole purpose of "stopping" human beings. Tunnel rats loved the 1911 because it was tough as nails and a great melee piece. He said, "If you can't hit 'em with it, HIT 'em with it! lol
He said that our M16 A1's were shitty toys made by "Mattel".. of course I didn't understand that part at the time. "We picked up AK's any chance we could. Anything .30 caliber or better for foilage penetration and terminal effectiveness. The 5.56 was great if you didn't have to shoot through anything to get to your target. M14 or a Winchester M70 in 30.06 with a good Leatherwood scope. But if you had one, you held on to your 1911, like it was your left nut."
