Default diesel vs gas

ok im looking into getting a truck basically just to make it easy when i want to pick up large items. so like the title says is the extra money worth the diesel engine? dont know alot about them but from my understanding diesel engines last longer and dont have as many problems. the main ones im looking at at the time are the 06 and up chevy 2500hd's...seem to cost from 13k-17k for used 100k mile ones, also how would i know which ones are the 360hp/650tq versions? thanks

Personally. I would take a diesel over a gas engine any day for trucks. They make so much more power for towing stuff, but it all depends on what you are wanting it for. Do you want it to tow large stuff or stick large stuff in your flat bed...? If you want to put large stuff in your flatbed rather than towing it, then a gas would do fine. Also if you want to put really heavy stuff in a flat bed get a used 3500hd. Otherwise get a diesel. The duramax are the best diesels on the maket. The new ford stuff sucks and I don't really know too much about the new cummins engines...probably way better than ford. I think they are all 360hp/650tq +/- 10tq? I don't know, but they are all the same engine and they have minor differences. So towing is diesel, just using the flatbed is gas... Good luck with the buy

Just remember diesels are or were supposed to last longer than gas, however with the new low sulfur diesel it is murder to them. By taking out the sulfur it is like taking the oil out of two stroke gas. It will murder the injectors first and then the top end. Unless you are willing to add the lost lube. Amsoil offers it and I am sure other places do to.

By 06, there were changes in design taking ULS into consideration, much like removing lead from gasoline in the 70s.

A diesel engine does last longer. Unfortunately, when used in non-commercial applications, they are saddled with so many EPA restrictive devices, like cats, EGR, etc. These add-ons are what's problematic.

And the engine is still surrounded with a body and electronics derived from it's gasoline brother.

Maintenance is outrageous on a diesel. $150 oil changes are not uncommon and they happen just as often as a gas change. Fuel filters run $60 and are required every 15K or so to keep the fuel system in good shape.

And they are freaking heavy. My 07 4x4 deisel 3/4 ton crew cab short box weighs almost 8000lbs! Load range E tires are required and it requires decent brakes to stop all that mass.

I honestly wish I had my 02 8.1 HD 2WD GMC back. It got the same mileage towing and has 1/4 the maintenance costs.

For the occasional trip to Home Depot or the dump around town for a person not employed to do so a gas engine Silverado is a better choice. I'll only replace my '01 8.1 HD with another like it if necessary. I can't see why most people will buy one of those noisey, stinky, high maintence, expensive Diesel engines for occasional light hauling. The gas engines are lasting well into the 300K range with proper care so how long do you need to keep one truck to come out ahead with a longer lasting long block? Never mind that the fuel system of the Diesel has a shorter life than the gassers.

Diesel is fine but just doesn't make sence for many people who buy them anyway because they are considered cool or are easy to make more power through programming. But then since it's all torque you spend a ton to make the truck hold it.

I have to agree there. A gas truck is a better choice if all you will be hauling is a small boat, jet skis, or an occasional Frig, plywood, etc in the back.

However, diesel trucks do have a much better resale value.

All that new emissions **** accidentaly fell off my truck a couple months ago. Must have hit a pothole or something.

X2.
First time out at the track my rig went a 8.85 in the 1/8th. Not bad for a 8K+ lb. truck.

I personally love my diesel and its not uncommon for them to last a good 1 million miles or more. How many miles do you think those semis have? But anyway for going to homedepot and dump, a gas is the better choice. Simple fact, diesels are more expensive, but are necessary for towing as an example.

Yeah we had the 8.1 Chevy 2500 HD and pulling our boat to Somerville sucked our friends Powerstroke would make it all the way up there and back without having to fill up, we had to put gas in before we left to come home. Our Duramax pulled the boat awesome and got really good mileage too, our 6.7 Dodge does about the same as the Duramax did and it was lifted with 35's, it does suck about all the new emissions and stuff but I would definitely get a diesel over a gas.

If you are gonna be pulling a boat and gooseneck occassionally, get the diesel hands down. No two ways about it, you will enjoy the diesel more....I promise. Had an 01 2500HD Chevy with the 6.0 gasser in it and it wouldnt pull a sick ***** off a **** pot and got horrrrrrrible fuel mileage to top the cake. Now I have an 01 Dodge with the Cummins that Ive had 3 yrs. and have 190k miles on it and even with all those miles it still puts down 439hp/809tq. I commonly hook on to my gooseneck livestock trailer and tow 10k+ @ 80mph and get 20+mpg when unloaded. I enjoy the Duramax's equally as well. Just seems to me like the gassers get noticably weaker with higher mileage and seems like the diesel's just get stronger when they get broke in around 150k. OH, one thing is for sure......If youre not good about regular meticulous maintenance, the diesel will make you go broke when you start fixing stuff.

Well make sure you compare apples to apples, there slick.

My HD had a 21 gallon tank and my deisel has a 28. And because of the way it's vented, you can squeeze an additional 3 or 4 gallons in it.

So 21 gallons at 11 mpg is 231 miles and 30 gallons at 13mpg is 390 miles.

And I call B*LLSH*T on 20 mpg @80 with a 10K load.

The guys that buy a big diesel truck to pull a 21 ft boat or a trailer twice a year crack me up.
I personally don't care if people want to play big rig, but don't make lame excuses that you "need" it.

I didnt read the above posts, but Diesel is the way to go! For fuel mileage, pulling power, durability and over all longevity. I have 109k on my truck now, it runs like its brand new. And modding!!!! oh...you wouldnt belive the power you will get out of a diesel with bolt ons and tuning! I personally will never buy another gas truck again! You can get all the creature comforts in both models, but I just prefer diesel. I can drive to and from work (20 miles) for 2 weeks with 1 tank of fuel. thought I would put my $.02

a side note, on a road trip, pulling 6000lbs, 841 miles, I averaged 18.6 mpg, doing 70 mph the whole way......I consumed 51.5 gallons of fuel....

another side note: I love blowing the doors off a mustang or a honda in a 7000lb truck
