Default 70 Chevelle ID!!!

Well today I bought a supposely 70 Chevelle SS, and it is pretty hard to know if its a real SS. All I know it was a 4-speed, it has the SS gauges, it says ss in the interior, disk brakes, and no power steerring. Is there any more clues to whether know if its an ss. Btw it doesnt have the original hood, and has a non original 10 bolt!

Boxed lower control arms, rear sway bar. I believe there is also extra bracing on the frame. Check to see what size the fuel line is, Lee

Doesn't the VIN give details to what your looking for? Get a book on VIN codes for that car.

nah the vin number wont tell me if its an ss or not, except if its a v8 or not. The car hasnt been driben since 86 and all the ss parts look pretty old, I doubt they would change the parts back then. Plus I doubt they made Malibu's with 4-speeds!

1970 and later Chevelles VIN does not tell you if it was an SS nor does the cowl tag. You need the build sheet to know for sure. Does it have a big block? If it does, does it have the VIN stamp on the casting pad? Does it match the VIN on the car? Big blocks had a different steering intermediate shaft. If you look at the flange that connects the rag joint to the intermediate shaft, small blocks were pressed on, big blocks were bolted on with a 12 pt headed bolt. Front sway bar on the SS was 1-1/8" non SS was 15/16". Big block fuel lines were different, but Im not sure on the details. You can also check your trans. Assuming its a Muncie, the VIN will be stamped on the passenger side of the main body near the tail shaft. You can also ID the trans by the trans casting numbers. That might give you an idea if it was an SS or not (certain trans weren't available behind a small block)

On the dash, an original 1970 SS dash will not have a seat belt light. It will not have silver (or chrome) around the 4 small lights in the middle of the dash (signal, brights, and brake). 1970 gauges had green letters while 71&72 had white letters.

You can also pull the numbers off the 10 bolt. They aren't VIN stamped to the car, but you can check casting numbers and build dates. If they coincide with the car, chances are it isnt a real SS

Because there are more clone/fake "SS" cars on the road than originals now. And yes, people did build clones in the '80s too. Think of all the posers here putting SS emblems on their Z28s when the cars were still new. Same thing, different car.

I'd be mostly leary of the 10-bolt being in that car. It is very rare that someone would ditch a perfectly fine 12-bolt on a Chevelle that was still being driven. That typically happens when a car is junked or just a parts car.

Fat chance, but pull the back seat out and see if you can find the build sheet. Back in 1991 I found a 70 SS in a field with no motor or trans and was leary of it, so I did the obvious and checked for the build sheet and there it was under the back seat. And it was a true SS with a factory BB. Also look at the heater box on the firewall, if I remember correctly, A BB had a heater box pointing straight to clear the width and a SB was tilted in a little toward the drivers side. Oh I paid $150 for it, cleaned it up and sold it a month later for 6k back in 91. Wish I still had it though.

I pay 2500, but if I find out its not an ss Im gonna be pissed! I really think its an old faded ss, you can tell its been crashed and has a malibu front end, one fender has the chrome molding and the other one doesnt.

2500 for a basket case chevelle is about the going rate.....

What chrome ring molding are you talking about? Two differences in the Malibu and SS front end 1) Malibus had a silver grille and SS had black. 2) Malibu has orange signal lights in the bumper, SS had clear.....

No 4-speed available in a Malibu? I'm sure you have enough info by now.

Pro Street 632 found a 21-yr-old SS in a field and only had to clean it up;now that's luck!
