Default Question for those of you with cutouts...

Is it ok to drive around all the time with my cutout open? Someone told me that driving with an open cutout is like driving with open headers, and I risk burning a valve. So I was just wondering if it was safe to drive around with an open cutout all the time.

yes it is. if you have long tube headders you could take the y pipe off and even that is enough back pressure on the heads to keep from burning a valve. cold air being sucked back in to the motor is how valves get burned.

on a side note I have a 96Z with mac mid headders and my cutout fell off one night and i've been running it like that for 6 months with no problems.

the hot exhaust pipe will heat the air up before it gets to the valves

There's plenty of cars out at HRP rolling around with open headers, and they are not worried about it. i think you'll be fine.

I have an electric cutout and only closed it when I was pulling into my neighborhood just to be respectful. On the streets it's always open.

As long as the cutout is far enough downstream, then it can't burn a valve.
