Niether SKS nor AK are accurate guns beyond 150 yards. they are tough, reliable, fun, cheap, not accurate.

I think im going to start with a sks and spend some money on a gun cabinet, then save up and get a quality rifle. I think i play too much call of duty waw because im starting to consider a mosin nagant but not sure if ammo is easily available

youll enjoy an SKS, its a fun gun. Try rabbit hunting with it. dont expect to kill any rabbits but try real hard, its a blast!!!!!! Drive around in a pasture or field till you scare one up, jump out grab the SKS and give it your best. you use a lot of ammo, prob wont hit a single rabbit, burn some gas, but youll have the time of your life and all things get to live another day.

I highly recommend you don't buy any firearm until you get a chance to try out a buddies rifle. Find someone who has what you are interested in and shoot theirs. Many rifle ranges have rental guns you can try out. My belief is that a gun is as personal as underwear. Ask these guys what underwear to buy and you'll get a hundred options just like you got for firearms.
If you aren't an avid shooter, don't waste your money on a high tech competition or sniper rifle. Most shooters at a range don't go past the 100yd targets unless they are serious. If you can't shoot a 10" grouping at 100 yds you don't need sub 1 MOA accuracy. It will will be expensive, and you don't know where your shooting life will take you.
You want to pick the best ammunition for the intended target, and since your target is currently paper, just about anything will do. pick a round that you can afford to shoot and hone your skills with. 30-06 is a fine ammunition but I hate throwing over a dollar down range every time I pull the trigger.
Buy good quality and moderate price. If you do that and you outgrow the gun in the future you can always sell.
I've shot iron sight M-16/AR-15s freehand at 600 yard silhouettes and M-60s at 1000 yard pop-ups, so don't think you need a scope to hit a target.

BTW, I just noticed you're in Dallas.
I've got an AR-15 carbine (16" barrel, colapsable stock, NOT FOR SALE). I shoot at the Garland Public Shooting Range. PM me if you'd like to meet and try it out.

Im going to pick up the rifle in great shape for 170$

Of ^^ those three options 5.56 is going to be the most accurate. It's downside is the bullets are too fast and light. They begin to tumble at about 500 yd and loose accuracy quickly after that. With FMJ a through and through will barely phase an armadillo, while a JHP, JSP, or Balistic Tip will push half his vital organs out the other side, or almost split him in two.

going to buy a mosin nagant 91/30 tomorrow for 175$, clean gun well kept and only like 20 rounds through it. i will be buying a scope and getting it mounted along with a metal gun cabinet. Ive noticed different magnifications on the scopes, any advice as far as that goes i can get 3.5-7x for about the same price it seems, most are around 100 bucks
