That's the key right there.
ANY tire can fail if they are old. I just took a set of Eagle F1's with 75% tread off of my '01 Camaro SS. It pained me to do that, but they are the original factory tires (car has 13,700 miles). They are 8 years old and I am not taking any chances.

I have bought used tires before, but you must check the date. I have found alot of "great" deals only to find an expired date. The seller usually does know about the date. Glad you walked away. Good luck on the car. Was that on a stock wheel? If not, thats another factor. That tires needs an 11" wheel.

Update.....
Holy Crap !! Oh my Gosh !! Oh **** !!
I just checked the date code on the tires, 4402 !! So, they were made in the 44th week of 2002. About 7 yrs old. If Dom can say it , I can too....
I retract my previous statement ( on Sumitomo tires. )
Allstate will not total my Z28, and will replace everything back to new. Lesson learned on older tires. Now, I got to wait on Classic to fix my ride.
Thanks,
James

But I did have to use the BFH to pound the inside wells because of tire rubbing. The tire blew on the outside sidewall.
I have now moved the car to Sport Performance in Stafford to do the repair work. Classis Chevrolet did not want to work with me on the estimate. I wanted them to eat the $200 deductible and touch up some paint, but they wouldn't budge.

Nothing wrong with sumitomos.
I sell them all the time. Cant expect to much traction for a 100 dollar 315.
But structurally Ive seen great things from Sumitomos, and I am actually a Michelin man.
The HTRZ 3s are great tires though, tirerack had them performing on par with the Bridgestone RE050A Pole Positiion. Next time you get a chance do a price comparison on those two.
