2010 SS race car build
#21
Nothing wrong with numbers matching classics, but its the waxers at the Saturday night car meet with their stock 99 SS that they built a ton of that thinks that car is going t be worth millions one day so it cant be modded.
Tony, can you point to the Dolly where the LT1 touched you or you old white Mustang? You had a lot of guys that made good power, but far as tuning goes, just wasn't there for the longest time, even with the early days of the LS1s it wasn't like what you have now. I remember guys with the nasty blower LT1s having to fly people in to tune their cars because very few people really knew how to tune them. Do you remember the old Gen 6 DFI or the Speed Pro set ups, nothing like whats out now. Those were the "just put a carb on it" days.

I honestly wish I knew more about carbs, there definitely a hot rod knowledge gap between the old school and new school guys. A lot of the FI guys complain the carb guys are ignorant about FI, that carbs sucks but they have no clue on how they work or how to tune one.

Hi Guys,
The car is being built for wheel to wheel roadracing in NASA's American Iron series.
Why didn't we start out with a BIW (Body In White) ?
They're not available yet - they will be sometime in 2010. Something to do with a bankruptcy of all things...
Actually - I've also done a lot of Corvette work and we figured in the long run we would save a lot more $$ overall by starting with a complete car.
The Rear Suspension alone would about break the bank buying it one piece at a time. Then there's the front suspension which wouldn't be much better.
The Engine and Trans will be going back in the car in basically a stock configuration (except for headers & tune)... We are lightening the car as much as possible as she weighed in at 3840# with 3/4 load of fuel. We are working with Pfadt Racing for suspension mods.
Now - if this were to be a drag car, a BIW makes more sense since you would be dumping the IRS in favor of a solid axle and probably looking at a lighter front suspension as well..
Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them..
Thanks!

Neil, while were you were still popping wheelies on your Huffy, I had the displeasure of working on LT1 cars that my buddies owned. It didn't take having to own an LT1 for me to think they are a POS engine. Hell, I've never owned a Kia and I can tell you those suck too. The SBC is a better engine than the LT1 is, mostly because of how easy it is to work on and the parts available for it. Carbs aren't magic, they are simple. When LT1s were new, I was more into the 5.0 Mustangs. I now look back and also think 5.0s are some crap too, compared to what we have today. LT1s are just bigger crap.
LT1:
Crappy intake manifold? Check
Crappy Optispark? Check
No access to plug #8? Check
No higher rpm powerband? Check
Shitty flowing heads? Check
Heavy iron block? Check
Shitty SBC exhaust port spacing? Check
Leaky engine gaskets? Check
Blistering 14.2 stock performance? Check
Stupid dual blade throttle body? Check
Looks like a winning platform to me!
