A lot of people do it, but its because they road race their car frequently and its cheaper this way rather than to take the car to the alignment shop all the time. Although for a street car it would be cheaper to just take it to an alignment shop as the cost for the tools wouldn't be justified with the frequency of use.

Alignment string machines are still a few hundred bucks, like Donamian said. Plus, you have to learn how to use them. For most people, it is a waste of money since you rarely need an alignment.

I read an article recently in a hotrod magazine might have been PHR but not sure. Like mentioned above there are still tools you would need and I didn't understand a lick of what they were explaining lol (not saying you wouldn't). I would just take it to a shop and be done with it.

Iv'e seen it done many times during a yellow flagged race.

You and 4 of your friends should be able to do it in less than 1 lap, just like on TV.
