Question first gen for $500?

Well co-worker has had a 1st gen in his backyard for quite some time now. He offered it to me for $500, it needs like basically every single sheet metal panel to be replaced. But i figured i can slowly gather stuff for it. Question is should i buy it?

he said it was a original ss 4speed car

Go look it over and see how bad the rust is and if there is any serious damage. It can't hurt to work slowly on it as they will only appreciate in value.

Pull the cowl numbers and check see what it tells you. Looks to me like a basket case. That's cheap and MAY be worth restoring but rust repair is pricey. Unless you're going to do it yourself, you're probably better off spending more on a cleaner starter.

Just my .02.

That's what I thought hybred, I have seen the car in person, that's why I posted that it needs every single sheet metal to be replaced. I'll check the cowl numbers at a later date, SS or not figured it be a nice long term project.

I bought a 79 Camaro from my older brother, for $500 with no engine/tranny, and traded it for my 68 Bird. I was in worse shape the this Camaro. It came from the Bay Area area. Parts are plenty available.

For $500 I would buy it and send it straight to the chassis shop for a new 4 link and Chris Alston Chassis. Then send it to the paint and body shop and then to the interior shop and before you know it you have $30k in it without a driveline yet....Oh wait, just buy one already done for that price

Definitely a lot of work but seems like a fun project for $500 to me.

Ooooooor you can teach yourself how to do some of that then just have shops fine tune it if need be. Maybe not the chassis stuff but definitely the body.

Yeah I restored my 80 Trans Am for like $3000 lol.. Hell half of that could have been avoided. $400 went to replacing the bushings(pissed that my mom wouldn't let me do it myself) and $500 for a tranny(my fault).

You should buy that car, everyone wants a 67-69 Camaro so you will have no problem selling it for a lot more.

Just don't do Prostreet 632's method, you will lose your *** fast. This one guy brought a 79 Camaro through work and when they said he spent $6500 for his interior I nearly fell over laughing, not to mention it had that smelly *** fake leather and a few flaws. I paid $1000 for the complete interior of my car and didn't have that stinky fake leather smell to live with.

That's because you can't do my method for under that price...a full chassis and cage for the car is 15-20k and then the rest you can skimp on and have done for around 10k.

The problem with most projects is that they are bought for cheap and after a certain amount of time you lose interest in it because you work on it so much and want to sell it. That's why I pay to have all my big work done for me.

Well, with stuff like that you need to take it to a shop, but with the interior and such it's just stupid what they charge. Sorry, I forgot to expand my last post from just interior..

Anyways a car like you are describing would be something pro-touring right? Very hard to find a nice one for cheap so something like that would be worth it.

personally, I would try to get it back to as much original as possible. There are to many pro street 1st gen's out there. There is so many bolt on parts that it will make you head spin. Try not to cut it up for fat tires.

Buy it and if you don't end up doing something with it you'll probably make money off the car. Cars similar to that go for $2500+ on craigslist.

If you are crazy enough not to buy this car let me know and I'll head that way to purchase it.
