Trying to remember, it was like 8 years ago. Didn't spend a lot on drinks b/c I don't drink much. I usually get trashed the first night so I don't want a drop the rest of the trip. Food was up there though. Flight was about 175 which was a gift, round trip. It was a group, so the hotel room was next to nothing, stayed at the Flamingo. I was still in school when I went, so my primary income was bartending, hence the bar was closed on the days I went.
That being said, I left with 600 cash just for play money/food/gifts, and came back with roughly 1500 from what I can remember. So yes, I came back with ~900 bucks extra in my pocket.
As for the "play now, work later" hard comment, the small amount of money he is going to spend will have nothing to do with his future especially considering investments. I didn't invest in my 401k until five years (23ish) ago when I found out we have percentage matching up to 3% of my income. At 28 my 401k is triple what both my parents was at my age and has already doubled my sisters (she is 6 years older). Just b/c he wants to go out on his 21st birthday doesn't mean he is going to work at walmart after retirement. Hell, you're the one talking about buying a 50k+ car. I'm assuming your going to finance that car, where you will pay about 10 k to 15 k just in interest.
The car parts will always be there, your 21st birthday only happens once. Take a Taxi, and hit up every bar you can for a 21st birthday shot, most bars will give you one. Just make sure and tip![Winky](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_wink.gif)

and FYI inflation is about 4% so whatever your 401k is doing needs to be above that to buy the same stuff you could have when you and your company put it in.
not saying dont party, but start thinking 30 years down the line and there will be fewer mistakes in your life as if you think 3 weeks down the line.

Also, who's to say you won't have any money if you have fun throughout life? I know MANY people in their 40's+ that partied and had fun throughout their lives and still make $200k+/year. It's all how you manage it.

well, my 21st isnt for another year, but on my 20th we took a shot of vodka for every year i've been alive, dedicated it to something from that year, and ended up getting the cops called and my girlfriend kicked out of her apartment. luckily one of the cops was my best friends uncle, so they laughed at us and left..
PS: might wanna put this on the "what not to do" list..

Jeez man, chill out. You CAN have fun and be responsible at the same time. You can work hard as hell from age 20-50, and have a ton of money. But you won't have any great stories to tell your kids, or have any fun in life. You only live once.

Well my 21st birthday went pretty good. Went to the liquor store around mid day and bought a bottle of patron (felt pretty cool walking out with it lol) killed that within a couple hours..went to saltgrass at 7:30, ate a steak w/lobster tail. Left there went a couple buddies of mine had a case of beer and a handle of Jim Bean. Drank that til I passed out.
