PC Repair?
I have had the same issue in the past and it was the power supply.
It is simple to replace. Pull your powersupply and check the wattage posted on it. Should give a diagram with wave charts and so on. On most current systems a 500 watt PS should be fine. To much power won't hurt, to little power and you'll have issues.
Every motherboard is designed differently, a bad CMOS battery COULD prevent the motherboard from storing boot parameters a shorted chip on a memory stick or any of the cards can most definitely prevent the motherboard from powering up and running POST. The point of troubleshooting is to check everything and try and isolate the problem.
Its like saying "Well my car wont start so its either the battery or the engine'
I ended up buying a new laptop last week so I'm not overly concerned with fixing the old one anymore. The only thing I would like to do is pull the files off the old hard drive. What's the best way to do this?
