Bad memory and so on would give an error notification usually given from the pc speaker.

I have had the same issue in the past and it was the power supply.

It is simple to replace. Pull your powersupply and check the wattage posted on it. Should give a diagram with wave charts and so on. On most current systems a 500 watt PS should be fine. To much power won't hurt, to little power and you'll have issues.

Every motherboard is designed differently, a bad CMOS battery COULD prevent the motherboard from storing boot parameters a shorted chip on a memory stick or any of the cards can most definitely prevent the motherboard from powering up and running POST. The point of troubleshooting is to check everything and try and isolate the problem.

Its like saying "Well my car wont start so its either the battery or the engine'

I took off the side of the case tonight and nothing comes on and there are no lights. The only light that is on is on the back of the PSU above where the power cord plugs in. I removed the power connectors from all the drives and the mother board and still nothing.

I forgot to mention that the PSU is small on this desktop. It is 5.9" wide, 4" deep, 3.4" high. I think most of the PSU's I've looked at were around 6" deep and I don't have room for one that deep because the CD drives are right there

what model PC is it? You can buy a Power Supply new for about 30 bucks, take it out and plug the power connectors into the motherboard , there should be at least 2 that plug into the motherboard. If it doesn't power up you can take the PS back and get your money back.

Thought I would post an update. I ended finding a power supply and swapped it out last night. It didn't fix the problem... In fact the computer was dead just like before.

I ended up buying a new laptop last week so I'm not overly concerned with fixing the old one anymore. The only thing I would like to do is pull the files off the old hard drive. What's the best way to do this?

take the Hard Drive out of the old Machine and stick it in a new one. There are two cables you have to connect one is for power and one is for data, If you dont have a desktop machine to stick it in, you'll have to buy a hard drive enclosure which is basically just a box that you has the cables inside it to plug into the hard drive and a USB cable coming out to plug into your laptop.
