Default PC Repair?

I went to use my computer today and it won't turn on. When I push the power button nothing happens. The green LED on the back is lit like always but I can't get the computer to turn on. The last time I used it was on Thursday and it was working fine. I have all my pictures on it and I'm worried about losing them.

Any ideas on what might be wrong? I unplugged it and plugged it back in but nothing. My monitor and printer have power so I know the outlet is working.

Where is a good reputable place to have it repaired in the DFW area?

if I don't know what I'm doing should I try to replace the power supply myself?

I remember a while back my pc wouldn't turn on but once I unplugged it and plugged it back in it worked fine. Do you think this might have been a sign the power supply was going bad?

FWIW about a year ago I bought a new gateway pc from best buy online, several weeks ago I noticed my pc would seem to shut off and reboot on its on a lot, then all of a sudden while in use it would shut down. Did some research and found this happens a lot, some due to heat issues, some due to cheap low wattage powersupplys that fry quick. So I took out the 300 watt power supply and added a 550 watt power supply and a cheap $9 case cooling fan and it works flawless now, seems these pc makers cut a lot of corners in an effort to sell cheap PC's, YMMV

PS-I get most of my parts @ newegg or tiger direct, fwiw

Could be one of two things; your motherboard or power supply.

Crack it open and check to see if the power light is on, on your motherboard.

It's not hard to replace a power supply, just unplug the main power cable to the motherboard, then unbolt it from the rack.

If it's your motherboard, just order a similar one from newegg, take out your cpu, and RAM from the old one and put them in the new one and you're good to go.

I'd also lean towards a bad power supply...they are not crazy expensive, and are easier to change than doing valve springs on your LSx engine!

I don't have enough confidence in my ability to fix it to even attempt. Last tome I tried to work on a PC I cpulnt get the cd burner to install and once I did it still didn't work right.

take the side off and look at the motherboard, if you see any lights, its probably not the power supply. unplug all the CD / floppy drives and hard drives. If it still doesn't power up, carefully pull out the memory and any cards that are in the motherboard and leave only power connected. If it turns on and the fan spins up, its probably not the motherboard. then put the memory back in and the cards one by one to try and isolate where the problem is. could be something simple like a bad on/off switch
Your data is still on your hard drive, worst case you can just put the drive in another PC and get your data off.

Just has this happen with a Dell XPS 420, it wouldn't boot until i pulled the data cable out that connects to the card reader on the front panel.

Don't worry about your data, it sounds like your hard drive is fine. Another vote for a bad power supply.

I appreciate all the replies. I'm going to open up the case and take a look. Hopefully it is just the power supply but I'm going to make sure before buying anything.

I was looking up the specs on my pc and the power supply is a 200 watt. Might be with upgrading even if mine turns out to be fine. I will post up once I've looked inside

Try this: Unplug it from the wall, press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds, this will drain all the power off you motherboard, plug it back in to the wall and try to start it up, if this doesnt work you have a bad PS or bad SB, your data is intact, dont have to worry about that, if you have any questions just PM.

If you think it's your power supply thats bad, take it off and take it to your nearest Fry's or Best Buy and have them check the Power Supply (free of charge) for you.

you can buy a power supply keep the packaging in good condition, swap it in if it does not fix it, take it back the next day.

I have a question already... What's a SB?

thats too simplistic of an approach, many things can cause your computer to not power on. Could be a bad memory module, bad PC card, bad power switch, could even be the battery on the Mobo is dead. Could just be a badly seated card or cable or loose/dirty connection somewhere. The only way to find out is to get in there and have a look.

open the case, if there are no lights or fans powering on its your power supply. If fans come on then it will be you system board.

It's either the power supply or your power switch. Considering the other issues, the PC would power up it just wouldn't post bootup. The battery's only purpose is to hold bios configurations. You pull the battery, or it dies, your default bios settings would be loaded (that is if your desktop was unplugged). Bad memory and so on would give an error notification usually given from the pc speaker.

I have had the same issue in the past and it was the power supply.

It is simple to replace. Pull your powersupply and check the wattage posted on it. Should give a diagram with wave charts and so on. On most current systems a 500 watt PS should be fine. To much power won't hurt, to little power and you'll have issues.
