Really sounds like Austin is a place worth checking out. And I've read some great reviews on it after making this thread (just sounds like my kind of place). Of course, I have to find a teaching job first, which will ultimately determine where I'll be living.
Nice thing about Texas is that it actually appears to have a lot of nice cities to reside...
Thank you guys.

i like college station. but if you aren't in school there, there's no real reason to be there.
and yes houston sucks, but the surrounding areas can be fun. i live about half way between houston and galveston in the league city/south shore harbour area. kemah is right down the road, there is a big boating community, big car community, good schools, decent mall and shopping areas, plenty of resturants, there's enough bars and such around to make me happy...all in all i like it.

if i had it to do all over again, i'd move to austin. its a lot more fun than dallas. dallas/fort worth is very pretentious and any girls in my age range that i'm ever interested in are already married or divorced with kids.

I wouldnt, I grew up there, Im 24 now. Its not so much for the younger single crowd, its a little more towards older and family oriented, plus the deed restrictions say no bars or clubs so you have to elsewhere to go out and even then the bars are generally smaller. try clear lake/seabrook/kemah or up around The Woodlands/Spring area. Katy is pretty rocking too for sure, plus its close to the 1/4 mile at LMP.

None of the cities in Houston are comparable to Chicago in terms of nice, big city living. Chicago is my favorite city in the states. My fiancee and I go every Christmas just to freeze our *** off, and pig out on the Mile off lake Michigan. But the summers there are amazing.
I'm not a fan of San Antonio. My family lives there, and I really don't like too many parts of the city besides a few areas. Austin is just a neat town. I lived there for a little while, and it is a lot of fun. Something for everybody there. Houston is a giant, spread out city, where I have lived for 25+years. Decent night life, good schools, relatively cheap.

Austin is a great place for someone like yourself...but I must warn you, good luck finding a teaching job with several universities pumping out more teachers than anywhere in the country.

Believe it or not, there are alot of Chicago transplants in Austin and they seem to like it here. In fact I work with one. I'm just glad he's a white socks fan so I don't have to hear about the cubs all season. There is also a huge group that meets up during Bears games here, might need to look it up.
Btw, the average age is something like 27. If you're looking for females I would stay away from Cedar Park, Round Rock, and Pflugerville areas. Those are pretty much suburbs when compared to south of 183. Also the closer you get to 35, the more ghetto it gets. Anything east of 35 is considered Ghetto, except for some of the central Condo areas off of 6th.
If you like the bigger city feel, I would look at some of the central areas like Hyde Park or the Triangle. Pretty close to everything, and a 5 dollar taxi to down town.
I've lived off north 360 twice, 2244, and now live in the West Central (Terry Town) area. If you can afford it Terry Town is the way to go.
