If your going with a new Vid card as well you need to consider if you are going for a PCI Express 2.1 or 2.0

When I build, I try to build with "Future upgrade" in mind. That being said. Your Mobo is the most important purchase... everything else is determined by that purchase... i.e. Ram, Vid card Capabilities and type of Power Supply. (because Vid cards also determine PS type)
2.1 and 2.0 are identical compatibility wise. 2.1 adds some of the features 3.0 will offer to 2.0 x16 slots. Bandwidth and so on are identical. 3.0 is the next big step which will double 2.0 and 2.1's bandwidth, and will be backwards compatible.

I'm a big fan of freeNAS (http://freenas.org/FreeNAS). It's free, has lots of features, and the hardware requirements are minimal. Alternatively, if you're not comfortable with Linux, there's always Windows Home Server. I've been using it for a couple years and I like it. It's simple and does a good job of backing up my PC and my wife's. I bought an OEM license for $100.

For the Mobo, about $150-200. Not worried about PCI 3.0...

ASUS M4N98TD EVO

CORSAIR XMS3 (12GB Max)

AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2

XFX Black Edition P1-750B-CAG9 750W ATX12V v2.2 / ESP12V v2.91

Total = $584.96

Not sure what videocard you are looking for.

I quickly looked at specs. but I believe these are all compatible. If you have a decent video card and Hard drives... This system is REAL nice @ that price.

You definatly want SSD drives. Get a few for RAID 0, that will give you the most significant performance boost you will actually see.
