Default How old is too old to drive?

Sad story out of Tyler

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A fiery wreck involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle claimed the life of Kendrick Lee Clark, 23, Tuesday morning.

Clark was a resident of Palestine. The driver of the passenger vehicle was Helen Rice Turner, 71, from Lindale.

Accident investigators determined that Turner was traveling northbound on South Broadway and made a left hand turn on a yellow blinking light into the mall parking lot, when her vehicle was struck by the motorcycle traveling southbound.

According to authorities, both the motorcycle, and its 23-year-old driver caught fire upon impact with the vehicle.

Clark was taken to ETMC where he died from injuries sustained from the crash. Turner was also transported to ETMC for observation.

The guy was a navy vet., father of 2 and had just finished his last college finial and was going to work. He was pinned under the bike as it burned all because some old woman didn't yield the right a way and pulled in front of him. The videos in the link and it shows how bad the bike was burned. They haven't said if this woman is being charged yet, but it shouldn't come to a death before a seniors license is taken.

Well it sure as **** isn't 71, lol

My dad is 65 and regularly races his 997 turbo strip/street/roadcourse, still incline benches 275, deadlifts over 300 and can standing curl 150+ He certainly isn't going to lose all of that in 6 years, lol.

You can't simply put an age to it because I've know people in their early 50s that look/act/are old as **** and people in their 70's who are in better shape mentally and physically than some of my friends in their 20s

i think there should be a law making you take some kind of driving course and id say around 65 years old and should have to take a mandatory physical, there are alot of dangerous old people on the road they just seem to change lanes and pray that no one hits them and for god sakes dont blow your horn they're liable to stop right in front of you on i-10 to see what all the commotion is.

I could agree with the above post for the most part.

The age isn't the issue...it's the state of being.

I agree with Shawn, you also have to keep in mind the statistics all point to teen age drivers causing more accidents then older drivers. Also have to keep in mind, old people vote.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

She was making a left on yellow. Was the bike hauling *** to get through the yellow, instead of slowing to a stop? How many of us do that?

under 25 drivers are in more accidents...but 65 and older drivers are in WAY more accidents per mile driven then any other age group.

i think do think that over a certin age, you should be required to take a driving test and physical to maintain you DL. and that it should expire every 2 years and not 6.

dont get me wrong i agree some older people are in excellent condition my grandpa is almost 80 but moves around like someone in their 50's. what im saying is people age differently and should have their vision motor skills checked just to make sure you dont end up with some little old lady that cant see and has Alzheimers running down the side walk cause she doesnt want to give up her license (my great grandma did this and almost hit some kids so we took her license away and sold her car).

like stated above you can not base this on age. my grandfather is 88 and drives more miles every day than most people on this site. he goes to the gym everyday as well and he recently had to take a driving test which he passed with ease.

I agree, even as a younger driver you should have to retake it at some point though as well. Every 2 years for older folks maybe every 4 years for the younger people. I'm pretty sure everyone can agree on the fact that we have WAY to many idiot drivers on the road that seriously lack common sense. Also the state driving test is way to easy.

I imagine the lady can't see very well and may not realize it ... Mandatory vision, basic congnitive function, and physical assessment should be required annually at 68+ yrs old drivers. Keep in mind there are some 70yro folks in much better shape than some mid-50's peeps. However, the older you get the more wear and tear you experience and in the interest of public safety ... annual testing should be mandatory once you hit a specific year marker.

What does that mean? Here in SoCal we have blinking reds, solid reds & solid yellows at intersections.

The way that this light is set up, you are given a blinking yellow in the turn lane while oncoming traffic has a green light. It would be the same as having a round green light, as on a standard stoplight. The blinking yellow means yeild to oncoming traffic and proceed at your own risk. It appears that she was the one "hauling *** to get through the yellow". He had a green light.

It was a tragic accident either way. Both parties and/or their families will forever be affected by the events of yesterday morning.

You could easily swap the age to 17 and then make a case for raising the driving age limit. The driver could have been mid 30's and just not seen the bike coming or mis-judged the speed of a smaller object coming at them - it's not really that uncommon.

Ah did not know that.

We have green turn signals which give them a red.
Some of the signals turn from green arrow to green, which means yield to oncoming traffic. If it is yellow here, it is yellow to oncoming traffic too.

its a 45 mph zone and the amount of skid has determined he was traveling the speed limit. During rush hours that light turns to a blinking yellow to ease traffic because it is literally 300 yards from light to light through that area. I agree everyone ages differently some people are completely senile by the time their 60 and some are sharp over 100. Most people need not so much a driving test reminder of the rules but of the written test. You would be amazed the amount of people that don't know basics like right of way. Its normally up to the families to watch out for their seniors and do the responsible thing and take their license when the time comes but the fact is that alot of old people don't have their children that will look out for them. Because lets face it most old guys, like i will be some day, are stubborn and will never willingly admit defeat like not being able to drive anymore. I don't have a solution just food for thought.

Agreed. Vehicle size and speed are probably greater factors in this tragedy than driver age. I've seen bikes off in the distance and the next thing I know they're on top of me.
