Hot stocks (buy now or cry later)

I looked at trade and ameritrade, they both ask for$9 commission per buy/ sell of stocks.. Unless you dump a $2000 in to your account then it becomes free buy/sell for 30 days.. Well I'm a beginner at this and can't dump $2000 right away.. How can a beginner like me with let's say $200-$500 start buying/ selling if let's say I buy a stock for$4 but it'll cost $9 just for commission turn around sell it at $8 , but again pay $9 commission.. I would bet at a loss.. Unless I'm not getting something right.., any one care to chime in???

You dont have to put $2k to open an account . The two that I looked at :e trade and ameritrade. Etrade requires a $500 deposit within 60 days, or they will close your account. Ameritrade does not. They are both free accounts. The $2k I was talking about was for a promotion of no fees for 30 days.
