Default Looking for a commuter car what makes and models to look at?

Im going to be driving allot more for work and will be buying a cheap commuter car. Was wondering what makes and models I should be looking at. Reliability and good gas mileage are the keys. I know toyota has always been good but have been hearing their quality has been lacking recently. Any thoughts are appreciated.

My sister has had two lancers. First one she bought new and drove it to 300,000 with only oil changes, like 1 belt and 1 set of spark plugs or something ridiculous. Hasn't had any issues with it either.

They look good and get good gas mileage, I'd say that is your best bet.

That's bad ***, they are nice cars.

I'd say the lancer because it's 4 doors.

I had a 2006 Accord SE, and while it ran great, the attention to detail was lacking. I wouldn't say it was "falling apart", but I only had it five years and when I traded it in, the steering wheel was shredding, the driver's side seat cover was coming off, and some of the interior panels were rattling and loose. Maybe I got a bad one, but I was pretty disappointed.

I have a Nissan Xterra XE that gets good gas milage. They come in different combinations from I4 to supercharged V6. I think they all come with a first aid kit too..

The tdi is a flat out awesome car. They will literally run FOREVER, lol. Even the 2.0 turbo gti are good. The tdi will knock on the 40-45 mpg and the 2.0 turbo in the gti gets in the 30 range on the highway. I would definately look into them. I worked on a lot of vw's at the shop I used to work at and they were very well built cars. I know an extended warranty adjusted that has in the 350,000 mile range on his 04-05 tdi jetta and still going strong. Oil changes and timing belts are the key on the older ones. I think the new tdi got rid of the belt iirc. Could be wrong though.

Aww man a fiesta! I'm leaning towards a tdi Jetta if I can find one for under 10 grand. Would like a wrx but I would end up modding it and defeating the purpose.
