Getting a first gun for my CHL. S&W 9mm or .40?
#23
Hear good things about the XDs. Just if you decide to go w a S&W, DO NOT go with a Sigma series. Junk. Or be safe and save some cash and buy a Ruger. Never, EVER, had an issue out of any of my Ruger weapons.

Its a larger frame than I'd care to conceal. I carry an XD subcompact. If you are larger you may not have an issue with it though, but its something to consider. The grip length is what gets me. I carry the XD with the short magazine.
Again, have you thought about how/where you're going to carry?

i have and carry eveyday a Smith & Wesson bodyguard 380. While its a smaller caliber gun, it is VERY light, super easy to conceal, and imo, a great gun for a first time gun owner and concealer....just food for thought

I have a S&W M&P 45 and a M&P 340 (hammerless 5 shot .357 mag revolver) for concealed carry.
I love M&Ps, and my revolver is an amazing concealed carry weapon. Only the people that know I carry know that I carry
For concealed carry, I vote revolver because if for whatever reason it does not fire there is no remedial action. You simply just pull the trigger again, which in life or death situations, seconds matter. And I can put every round in the target from 25 meters, which is pretty good for a .357 snub nose. Some may argue that they want more than 5 shots, but assuming you can hit them 1 will do the trick lol
I have 3 or 4 friends who own springfield xd's, and all of them love them. I have fired them and I personally prefer the S&Ws but I would have no issue owning an xd.
And to supplement the above statements........stay away from sigmas. Smith and Wesson is a great brand but the sigma is cheap for a reason.

Looks like I'm getting a good deal. My stepdad is a detective for Seabrook, so he asked his cop buddies if they were selling any guns. One guy is selling a like new Glock 22 .40 with laser sights and 3 magazines for $400.

for a self defense round, id stay away from 9mm. yea, its cheap and you can hold a few more rounds but lets put it this way. if u get mugged, more than likely, the guy is on some kind of drug. if hes on crack, he wont even feel it. id look into AT LEAST a .40. i carry .45 acp or .45 LC/410.

I have an SW40VE. I can't really complain. It does have a heavy trigger and I feel like I have to constantly reset my finger but I pretty much just use it for the range. I usually don't run more than 200 rounds through it at a time and I haven't had any issues. But it is one of their cheaper pistols, so YMMV. I also have a Ruger P95, Taurus PT1911 and a Remington 870 so I like a little cheap, fun variety

Well ill go with the majority here.. Go to a range and rent the guns or something.. I bought the sw40ve bout a year ago and actually love the trigger pull... Added a grip and it shoots great.. After a few 1000 rnds Ive had no problems at all.. You'll get different reviews from different people..

[QUOTE=Greed4Speed;16137030]DAO? If so, thats par for the course.
Yes. This is before I knew anything about why I was buying. Looking for a 45 acp. I'm gonna get a rifle before I buy another pistol though. Unless I come across a good deal.

I'd say .40 or even .45 for personal protection. When the sh*t hits the fan, you aren't likely to be aiming anyway, just spraying and praying. I've always had Glocks, .40's and one .357 sig. I would agree to stay away from the 9mm. It's a faster bullet but you want knock-down power that the bigger calibers have. In my house I have a Glock .40 in 2 rooms and the Desert Eagle .50 in the bedroom.

I personally carry conceal a taurus millinieum pro pt145 .45 cal and I love it. Thousands.of rounds later its flawless and dead accurate. Say what u want bout taurus, but its a good gun, unlimited lifetime warranty, and reasonably priced. .45 may be too big for some, too much kick, but im 6'2" 200+lbs, and I wudnt shoot anything smaller. Ya a .45 might have less fps (approx 900 vs a standard 9mm at 1200) but I guarentee whoever u hit with it aint gonna get back up, and I highly doubt they will survive, just waaay too much damage with a .45 hollowpoint slug.

That's a good price on the Glock 22 w/3 mags. As a first gun, THAT will spoil you for future purchases. At least you'll have a good reference point for the future. You won't be sorry that it was your first gun.
Get with others at the range. See what others are shooting and politely ask if you can try their gun. Most won't mind letting you pop off a magazine, especially if they are proud of their gun. This is a good way to figure out what you want next... and then after that... and then your 4th.. etc..
Good luck in whatever you decide to go with. It'll be fun.
