What would you do
Here is a current project I'm finishing up for a friend. I personally think he should keep the stock color scheme. He says he wants to paint the car black with white rally stripes. I think the car would be alot better looking with an updated paint job as it came from the factory, even put a new white vinyl top on it?

I wouldn't do either.
Black with white stripes would be skunkish. Silver stripes would look better IMO.
The current scheme looks very dated. Kind of has the grandma vibe. Would be good for a sleeper, but not a car that you want to stand out. I also have never liked the vinyl tops, and I remember them from the 70's and 80's. I've seen a few painted a light gold color like that with black stripes that looked good.

I would leave it the factory color and drive the **** out of it.
Keep it different, everyone has flat black Novas. Its not a very common color combo, it will be worth more if you decide to sell it later.

At the end of the day the owner needs to build it to his liking or he won't be happy with it. The factory color won't make it worth any more money. The car is a hot rod now so thats out the window. you don't see that color often on a restored car. Why? I would say because most people don't like it. I think in the end if it was the original color it would take longer to sell the car if he ever did. If it were mine I think blue with silver stripes. Only if it were done right and the car was taken apart for the color change.
