I would guess that it is ChromeMolly. CM is stronger than mild steel but more brittle. Because of this it doesn't bend but it can fracture. That is why it is not allowed in NASCAR.

But why have the tubes fractured ? I'm not knocking anyones work, as my welding is atrocious. But it's clear the welds have held good, and the actual tubing itself has fractured.

Just to clarify, the area that fractured was the nitrous bottle mount. The one area of the cage John Harrison had nothing to do with. All of his work held up great. And as has already been said, John is one of the best in the business.

I have talked with John in depth about moly cage safety. If the tubing gets too hot at all the moly becomes brittle around the welds. He takes extra care when working with moly to try to maintain the structural integrity of the material.
