Default Alternator question

Recently replaced a dead alternator in my 2002 Ta. I never paid attention before, but now when I come to a stop, the battery gauge moves a little bit. It never gets below halfway (13) but it will fluctuate back and forth a little bit. Is this normal? I have no electronics other than an aftermarket Kenwood head unit. I do have a cam, if that makes a difference.

You make sure you didnt break the wire on the alternator? When i bought a new alternator it also did the same thing turns out the new one was also bad.

I had an ms4 in my old motor, and it occasionally moved, but nothing like you're talking about.

Here you go. Most replacement alternators are cheap junk. It's not unheard of to have a new one that isn't working right. The problem is most stores will test it and as long as it puts out 12V, they won't warranty it.

By the way, I replaced the stock one with an aftermarket 102 amp one. Is that not sufficient for my car?

thats what they are stock 102-105 amp.
the parts store alternators. will make the needle bounce. but the car will still run fine.
i get mine rebuilt a local alternator. shop. they rebuild with denso parts. paid 100$ for rebuild. 165 amp. go all the way up to 200amp rebuilds.
i save my alternator cores. and take them to get rebuilt. still cheaper and better that auto parts, 160$ + core.
get the starters rebuilt too 50$. ive been a customer since 2000.

I'm with NemeSS. I had mine done by a local shop to 165 and never had another problem. I did the same with my silverado. 285 amp and the needle bounced. Used really good battery cable bolts and the problem went away.

I had bouncing needles while sitting at lights with an old Optima red top battery, after a couple of jump starts I replaced with a yellow top and guages are solid now.

I did the same, replaced mine with a 145amp from a chevy truck.
Part # 391611 from O'Reilly auto parts
$165 or so. Fit in with no problems.

I remember reading years back on the forum about someone swapping to a truck alternator and it working out a lot better than expected. It make be under the Audio section.
