tx temp tag law changed... went by the dmv today to get a temp tag for one of my project cars. after filling out the request sheet, the clerk told me that the laws in tx had changed and that i was only allowed 3 temp tags on the same vehicle.
she said after the third time i would have to get the car transferred or bonded. gonna try to do some more research on it, but i thought i'd give you guys a heads-up.

I can't find it. I was looking for something else at the time...
Just me, but why would you need more than 3?
They have to tell you all the failed items the first time. Or is it like cali dmv and they only tell you half what you need each trip...

- Each inspection shall be a complete inspection performed by a certified inspector and shall include a check of all the items in the Rules and Regulations Manual, except that a reinspection of a rejected vehicle by the same station within 15 days of the initial inspection that resulted in rejection need only check the items previously found defective, unless any other obvious defects are noted. A vehicle NOT inspected because of no evidence of Financial Responsibility will not be considered as rejected and no fee will be charged. Once the inspection on a vehicle has begun, it must be completed whether or not the vehicle is passed or rejected.
And the reason why somebody would need more than three temp tags per year is that they are trying to avoid paying sales tax on the vehicle they bought.

People do not always understand the pain and frustration people have building a kit/project car. It's not always easy. Multiple 30 day tags are sometimes needed especially if you have a day job and the build takes a long time. Getting the suspension right may take multiple trips to the alignment shop. Or multiple alignment shops may be needed because the experience varies. Getting the bugs worked out. Road testing a tuning.... A lot goes into it... Not everyone is trying to be deviant and not pay taxes...
I think this is targeted at all of the junkies with their pos cars riding with temp tags for years. Had some people rent a house on our street- 3 families living in one house, selling whatever they could (got busted) and all 7 cars there were riding on bald tires and temp tags.

as stated in the opening thread "project car"...not crackhead ...not tax exemption. infact you are paying more ($25 per mon.) until you get it ready to be tagged...then you will pay like everyone else has to.
the problem is that you buy a "project car" that will not pass inspection or emissions. the car runs & drives fine, thus you can take it to different shops to get it up to par i.e. exhaust, trans, tires/wheels, etc.
if you are on a budget and need time to save money, plan your build, order parts, wait for them to come in, assy, so forth. or wait on a paint & body shop that has 3-4 cars ahead of you...then it becomes a problem.

Im glad they changed it, I pay 900 for my rigs registration per year. Tax evading jackasses would get 90 day temp plates for 27 dollars bringing their tax liability to 108 dollars.
