Default Car help

I put this in general maintenance an no response.
Ok guys so every time I go to start my car it cranks but doesn't start like it's supposed to. It's takes me a couple times for it to start. The car has had the fuel pump changed fuel filter new plugs an wires, I do hear the pump prime every time. I'm at a loss for this already so any help would be great thanks

Is the check engine light on? If so what codes are stored? If not does it work when the key is on before you start it?

When cranking (when the starter is turning the engine but it's not started yet) is the tachometer showing RPM above 350?

What car and engine are you asking about? How many miles? Any modifications to the engine?

Are you sure you are getting a spark? You can go to autozone and get one of those thingys you hold up to the spark plug wire (they cost like 10 bucks or so). Then if you are getting a spark you can rule out then and start looking at fueling issues such as your pump. It would be nice if you had a fuel pressure gauge on it, that tells you alot too.

My car had a similar problem, I couldn't figure it out for the longest time even after going down the line putting in new plugs, plug wires, coil packs, cam sensor, crank sensor and fuel pump then one day I was putting in some fuel and it wouldn't crank at all anymore. It ended up being the ignition key cylinder in the steering column.

You can also go find someone to hold the end of the spark plug while you crank it (preferably someone you don't like, like a neighbor). Then crank it over, if they jump then you have spark.

If I remember correctly, you have to remove the airbag in the steering wheel then also remove the steering wheel to get to it. I know there's a write up on how to do it somewhere on this site.

Had similar issue in my 2002 Z28.

Dealership told me it was the ignition cylinder and after paying them $500 to change it, a few days later it was still happening. Took it back and they said it was the starter now... I changed the starter myself and the problems were fixed.

Mine would just randomly not start, wouldn't try to crank or anything. I'd have to turn the key off/on/off/on and about after 10-15 tries it would crank. This wasn't every time though. It would start for 2 weeks just fine and then go 2-3 days where it would take me a minute or two just playing with the key.

Cycle the key 2-3 times until you hear the pump cut off. Then try to crank it and see what it does.

A friend had a similar problem.

Bought a new ignition cylinder from a GM dealership.
We dropped the lower panel under the steering column found the BCM harness.
Unplugged the harness from the installed cylinder, plugged it into the new cylinder
put the new key into "run" position, zip-tied it up and reinstalled the lower panel.

I didn't think it was the starter but now my battery gauge drops to like 9 volts or so. So tomorrow I'm changing the battery out an see what happens.

it appears that there are repro parts available

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...aro&vi=1371259

This will only work if the problem is with your key or the key contacts in the cylinder
