Default G8 cam/dod

Thinking of going this route

21 Century Muscle Cars 460 BHP
Cam Package

2008-2009 Pontiac G8
450 BHP / 420 lbs-ft of torque

Package includes:
• 21CMC custom camshaft
• Heavy Duty dual valve springs, titanium retainers
• Custom designed hydraulic roller camshaft
• K&N Air Filter
• Ported and polished throttle body
• Taylor spark plug wires
• NGK TR55 spark plugs
• Lingenfelter 160 degree thermostat
• All necessary gaskets, bolts and fluids
• Professional installation, testing and dyno tuning
• 2 year warranty on parts and labor

Normal installation time required: 1 week with prior notification.

All power figures shown are crankshaft numbers unless otherwise stated.

The package is 3200$ with dod delete. Was thinking of kooks headers and slp axle backs to go with it as well.

They have a 500 hp header package for 5000$ but it seems kind of high to me.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated. Newb at modifications :-)

Thanks

What area in Dallas are you in? There's a few good shops but 21st would be my last choice.

Spend some time on the G8board.com or on GRRRRR8.net and you'll see what all the fast guys are doing. Most people over-cam G8s and many of the fastest G8s run small duration cams with fairly narrow LSAs. Great for low and mid-range torque plus they continue to pull throughout the power-band. I have personally tuned over 400 G8s so I have the experience to point you in the right direction if you're not wanting to make the same mistakes so many others make. Sometimes less is more.

So what are your recommendations?

1. for someone not wanting to stall
2. something with around a 3200 stall
both being DDs

I am looking at this cam: 225/238 .612"/.585" 113+3 and possibly a RCR ported intake/equivalent, new tune, swap jba shorty headers for stainless longtubes, and maybe getting rid of my rotofab for something else.

If you are running stock torque converter, you want to keep your overlap at .050" less than 2 degrees. If you have a 3200 stall but are using your car as a DD, you can go up to 8 degrees of overlap at .050" before it gets too bothersome for 24/7 use.

The 225/238 113 is not a very good choice for a DD. A 13 degree split between intake and exhaust is not necessary. You lose too much low and mid rpm torque plus it takes a toll on street manners. At 5.5 degrees of overlap at .050", it's too much for a stock stall.

Good idea on ditching the JBA shorty headers, but the Stainless Works headers trail the American Racing and Kooks 1 7/8" headers in power production and fit and finish. I would not get rid of the Rotofab intake. It still makes equivalent power to the VCM intake and it allows you to run an LS7 MAF without the crazy radius bends that whack out the card style MAF (should you go that route). The LS7 MAF is worth 5rwhp over the stock L76 MAF.

Sorry, I meant a set of stainless in general, not SW. I am sure they are decent, but I wouldn't buy a set. I am between the cheap maximizer ebay set due to cost, kooks, and maybe Doug Thorley since they price is decent, but not stainless. I keep reading that the LS7 MAF is a good mod. I just put on the powerbond udp last night, mainly because my stock HB had the dreaded wobble. It may have solved another issue as well, waiting to give it a full test.

Thanks, I need to get with you in pm, or here, and get a better idea on a cam, and maybe a tune. VMS tuned this car, and personally I do not like this tune, but sadly I hear all their tunes are locked, so I am debating just buying a new computer and having it tuned. Vector wanted $250 for their cable and $75 to return it to stock just so I could have a local tuner take over.

Doug Thorley headers cost one cammed G8 customer 30rwhp compared to ARH headers. The DH headers were fine for bolt-ons, but once you add a cam, they severely limit power production. Seen it many times.

What's your take on the Vararam? Is the VCM now considered to be better than the VMC?
