It can be expensive and/or sketchy near SAM. I have heard 9900 Memorial (I think that's the address) is decent. They are older and bigger apartments, but reasonable $$ for the area.
You will be surrounded by uninsured drivers, but will get used to it. You can live further away to open up options, but commuting in Houston can be brutal. 290 is constantly under construction so keep that in mind if you look that way.
Does your wife work? What does she do? That can have an impact on things too.
Welcome to the heat and humidity. Houston had a great car scene so that will be nice for you.

^this.
The first thing to realize is how big Houston really is. Fun reading here http://explore.rice.edu/Standard.aspx?id=3378
Last can of grizzly I bought was around $5/can. There's a place close to IAH airport that sells TAX FREE tobacco, big ol can of stokers was about $25/tub. Basically a log in plastic tub form that fits nicely in my desk drawer lol
What are your NEEDS and what budget? House, townhome, apartment, rent or own?
Try not to live near SAM, the area used to be awesome..... used to be.

North West side, Pick a spot between 45 and 59.
A TON of motor heads in this area.
Stay away from Greenspoint or Humble
Get job as machinist, sit around and push buttons all day and talk ****.
Make phat cash, endless job opportunity's and room for advancement.

The key is to live as close as possible to where you work. And hopefully where you work there are some decent neighborhoods nearby. Otherwise commuting costs can be timely and expensive. The quality of life really drops depending on your commute. I'm seriously thinking about moving to the country, by a cheap trailer, pay cash. And retire and build cars for $.

How long do you plan to stay in Houston?
If you plan on staying long enough to have your kid enter a school, you need to be more cautious.
I suggest you go to a school comparison site and look carefully at the statistics for the area schools.
For example this one is near my house: http://www.greatschools.org/texas/cy...entary-School/
then click on the "students" button.
You will figure it out pretty quickly from there...

As you get out near the beltway and south of Westheimer it goes downhill very quick. Same with most outside the beltway. There are good pockets, but really hard to tell without specific addresses. At that point looking north of I10 around Long Point near antoine or that area would be as good and much closer to your school.
