Default Check Engine Light code question

This may be a dumb question, but is there a difference between clearing a code, and deleting one? I had my father in law bring his scanner over and erase 1 code (running lean) and a couple of days later it the check engine light came back on. I was under the impression that once you removed or deleted a certain code, it would no longer cause the CEL to come back on. Can someone please enlighten me?

Thanks

If you just clear a code with a scanner it can come back. In order to permanently delete a code you have to run the tune out, delete the code in the pcm and reflash the new edited tune back in.
