Default KLOL Radio folks to make Thursday appearance

This is at the Tiki Bar, which is in Baytown, right across the Fred Hartman Bridge. Its where all the boats are parked (you can see the Marina when you come over the bridge).

Former rock jocks reunite for charity

The self-proclaimed "Rock Gawds" of the recently dismantled Rock 101 KLOL radio station will reunite at Tiki Bay Bar and Grill Thursday for charity.

Shock jocks Outlaw Dave and Jim Pruett of the former Stevens and Pruett morning show are scheduled to appear at the Baytown restaurant with past and recent KLOL personalities.

Grego, the Boner, Locke Sebenhausen, Laurie Kendrick, Chuck Ackers, Lanny Griffith, Wendy Miller, Dayna Steele and crash-in-your-dash Collins and Tubby are some of the few who could attend.

This is the first time the group of disc jockeys will reunite since the

Nov. 12 replacement of Rock 101 with Mega 101, a Spanish hip-hop station.

Somehow mega media empire Clear Channel Communications was able to keep quiet about the replacement of Houston's oldest and loudest rock radio station. With a loyal listener base for the past 34 years, Rock 101 outlived many of its counterparts and was unique in its own rite.

Mark Stevens and Jim Pruett invented the "shock jock" theme before Howard Stern. The often-crude morning show aired from KLOL's beginnings in 1991 to 2000. Pruett coincidentally was on Outlaw Dave's afternoon program when the switch to Mega was announced.

"I learned about it like everyone else," he said. "101 was unique and I think its cool I got to be there on the first day and the last day."

Clear Channel chose to play The Who's "I'm Free" as Rock 101's final good-bye, which was also the stations'

first song played. Pruett said the end of KLOL was an end to an era.

"Anonymous people at anonymous desks in far away places make these kinds of decisions without thinking about heritage," he said. "Thirty-four years on the air, that's pretty heavy."

The new KLOL taps into the growing Hispanic listener base building in the Houston-Galveston area. Arbitron, a radio ratings system used nationwide, recently reported Spanish-speaking stations were favored over many English-speaking stations.

Arbitron reports, as of August, Hispanics make up for 1.2 million listeners in the Houston-Galveston area, meaning there is millions of untapped advertising dollars for English stations.

The top 10 Arbitron rated stations included three from Univison, a Hispanic company, and three from Clear Channel. KLTN 102.9 "Latinos" took the No. 2 spot just under KBXX 97.9 "The Box," a hip-hop and rap station.

But Rock 101 did not disappear unnoticed. Once listeners turned on their dial at 10 a.m. and then readjusted hoping there was a mistake, an uproar of protest erupted.

In less than a month, two online petitions have been formed, now boasting more than 20,000 signatures. Clear Channel received thousands of e-mails and telephone calls, including 2,400 emails that were sent solely to John Walton of the Walton and Johnson morning show.

Walton explained on his personal Web site that he was informed of the switch the night before by lower management who simply told him "there was no more morning show; don't bother coming to work tomorrow."

"It is very gratifying to see people get involved with (the switch). It is a great way for them to vent their anger and frustration at corporate indifference to their needs," Walton told KTRK Channel 13.

No one denies the enthusiasm behind Rock 101 fans, and that is the kind of support former staff members are hoping for when they hold charity events. Tiki Bar and Grill owner Jack Adcock invited the KLOL staff to reunite this week, and in doing so, they will try to raise money for the Stevens and Pruett Ranch for animals and children.

The 38-acre ranch in Brazoria County provides a home for neglected animals and teenagers. It all started when Jill Pruett wanted to take in an abused horse, leading to years of aiding neglected farm animals.

In the past nine years, the ranch began to take in teenage boys who were referred by Children's Protective Services and other family abuse agencies. The teens live and work at the ranch and attend high school. Pruett said the boys find it therapeutic to care for abused animals.

"The wildest boys and the wildest horses make the best of friends. It's enough to make a grown man cry," he said.

The ranch is dependent on private donations, and everyone often has to live month-to-month when funds get low. Currently, the organization houses nine boys, 17 horses, one cow, two burros, one goat and four pigs.

Ranch administrator Terry Blair said without charity, the ranch would not exist.

"It's an incredible program. Kids come here feeling sorry for themselves and then realize there's creatures out there also abused with no chance of surviving alone," she said. "Without donations, we'll have to close."

The last fund-raiser for the ranch was Outlaw Dave's motorcycle ride from Houston to Galveston that raised $12,000. It takes about $6,000 and month to keep the ranch running.

Rock 101 KLOL memorabilia will be auctioned off at 8 p.m. Thursday at Tiki Bar and Grill, 2651 Business Highway 146. For more information, call

281-837-6700.
